T^20? Or Star Wars D20?

For character classes, something to keep in mind: in most class-oriented games the character's class represents an archetypal definition of 'what the character does,' be it fight, sneak around, cast spells, or whatever. Traveller's careers/professions don't really work that way, and really reflect 'what job this character used to have before deciding to become an adventurer' (traditionally all Trav characters have retired (or been booted) from their 'career' before play ever begins; though later editions have blurred this rule somewhat).

Theoretically I suppose the most accurate way to handle this conceptual difference would be to have 2 distinct sets of Classes: the 'career' classes (Army, Marine, Navy, Scout, Merchant, etc.) primarily for NPCs and Prior Experience in char-gen, and the 'adventuring' classes, which would be things like Mercenary, Free Trader, Rogue, Traveller, etc (ie- more function-based, and reflective of the types of things Traveller PCs actually do in-game). The extra level of complexity and almost-certain confusion this would add to the system (as well as an at-least-implicit incompatibility with previous editions) may mean this isn't the 'best' method, but I do think some acknowledgment should be made of the fact that a T^20 PC with the Marine character class (for example) is almost certainly not still enlisted in the Imperial Marine Corps.

I've got it! I've got it! Here are the new classes for T^20:

Pre-school
K-12
Undergrad
Postgrad
OJT
RIP

that should cover it!

Wally.

Another thing to consider for competition: Star Trek D20. With the new ST show coming this fall about near-future space exploration (pre-Federation), it may interest many newcomers and oldcomers to SFRPG. I wonder if WOTC (they own the ST RPG license, right?) might try to come out with a ST D20 book near the time of the first show or soon after?

Maybe T20 should come out about then, too? And, borrowing from FF&S, have some optional rules about different FTL drives (i.e., warp)? They do not need to be as extensively detailed, but described how they could replace Jump drives and distance covered over time (hopefully nearly the same as Jump drives to the two can co-exist without one making the other obsolete).

CT was generic with its 3 books. I hope T20 is generic with options or examples using the Imperium setting.

WoTC no longer holds the Star Trek license, it is held by Decipher who is taking their time on getting anything together on it.

So that is not a worry on competition at the moment.

I would like to see more specifics on character creation first. Then be able to use them in a mini adventure and then to comment on the feel and mechanics. In other words let the designers work and then we can feast. I am really looking forward to using this system.

Below is the response i got from Decipher a while back (pre thier press release, which says more or less the same)

Mark,

Thank you for your interest in the upcoming Star Trek RPG and miniatures by
Decipher. Currently this product is in development and we anticipate sharing
more information through our web site in the coming months at it becomes
available.

The game is still in development, so the direction it will take remains to
be seen. What I can tell you, however, is that the game will not use the
ICON System, but will use a compatible d6-based system complete with
conversion guidelines.

For more information on Decipher products and upcoming releases, please
visit our web site at:

Thank you,
Doug Burke

doesn;t sound overly great, considering i asked them if it would be a D20 system or a continuation of the ICON system, apparently the new Star Trek will be thier own system....

For me, what makes T20 good compared to Star Wars is that it's a more generic sci-fi and Star Wars automatically causes players to enter one certain mindset.

With T20 you stand a better chance of breaking the players out of thinking Star Wars from the outset.

Sure, Star Wars can be cool, as can Star Trek, or Babylon 5, but if I want to avoid having to swim upstream against those very detailed and ingrained ideals in order to do my own thing, then I don't want to use those books to create characters from.

I've been hoping someone would do Traveller in D20.

Thank goodness it's happening.

If you follow the discussion board on TrekRPGNet you will know that the new Trek game will be released in August and September (there are 2 core books), that it is made by the same people who made the Icon Trek and that it is the game they wanted to make all the time if they had the time.

The system is a dice pool, with class kits you pick up and they have made starship combat much better (in their own words). It is a universal Trek game meant to cover all periods and as such it contains much broader rules.

BTW the system is the same as the system in the new LotR RPG Decipher is going to release on the premier date of the movie in December.

I don't know whether the Decipher Buffy game will be with the same rules.
