T5 Deck Plan Set 1 from FFE

I just received an email showing that Deck Plan Set 1 from FFE is now available. The tease plans look cool. Just wondering though, in T5, is the Beowolf Free Trader a 200 displacement ton vessel or larger? If it's 200 dton, then it looks like they still haven't fixed the plans in 35 years.

Type-T Escort/Fleet Corvette

Those Deck Plan previews seem to clear up an errata item as well. In the T5 Core Book, the the old "Type-T" Escort/Fleet Corvette is variously described as 400 dton (like the old CT version) and 500 dton at another place.

The plans in the preview are 400 dton according to the T5-USP.

Note that if you were a Kickstarter backer, you can order a discounted copy of the full set, in place of the free subset you would get as a backer.

TGS for Commercial Vessels

Looking at the Deck Plan Previews, does anyone know what the Prefix "TGS" stands for on the Beowulf? IISS and INS are self-explanatory for the others, but I have never seen TGS for a Traveller Commercial Vessel before.

Perhaps "Trade G________ Ship" ?

Something to do with the TAS Green List introduced in T5 perhaps?

TGS = TAS Green Ship

Trader's Guild Ship, from the Trader's Guild Starship Recognition Guide?

I'll just be glad if the set does not require an errata doc to fix it all up.

Even more incredible will be if everyone can actually agree 100% on all set facts and figures provided in the deck plans.

To think, it could be the very first product to be released for Traveller that will not be debated and of which all Travellers agree upon!!!

The Spinward Marches map will also be intriguing. Will it match the current Traveller map data at www.travellermap.com or will it once again create a pile of people all disagreeing and declaring it doesn't match 'there version' of Traveller? Also, why is it that the only 'official' maps that ever seem to get published outside of the CT material and associated support companies(of 26+ years ago) is 'The Spinward Marches' map?

With a great resource such as Traveller map, I'm astounded that many Travellers do not even want to take that on board and only wish to remain in the maps they worked out 25+ years ago etc?

At the end of the day, it would be really nice if there was a set area of space that really was common to all Travellers. I mean confounded fantasy games all seem to be able to agree on maps and time periods and layouts etc, why not Traveller? Personally, the contradictions are tiresome and detract from the overall game. I guess the main issue is the different time periods.

If you look closely at the preview, it looks exactly like what travellermap.com might spit out. Just saying...

Well, now it's just tradition. You can't question that.

Actually, the entire domain of Deneb was in MT era (in MTJ), and again in TNE (RegSB).

Hinterworlds was MT era (Challenge).

However those were not full layout poster maps correct? Mongoose and several ancillary companies have printed a few sector maps. Mongoose put out there poster maps(which many disagree upon), but official GDW and FFE output to date is solely the spinward marches in poster layout format. Yes there has been survey data and magazine published material, but that's not poster maps is it?

To date, the only official full layout poster map, is 'The Spinward Marches'. It would be nice to see at least 10 such maps featuring different sectors throughout what FFE considers essential canon sectors for gaming in.

I look forward to the new adventures announced in the recent update featuring the new material. Here's hoping there not all set in the spinward marches.

On a more important note does this sector sum up the guts of the Traveller universe for most fellow Travellers?

Thanks for the heads up on the new Spinward Marches map too, I can't squint that well but needless to say I'm considering the upgrade depending on if my current gaming group is still operational or not.

Yes, they had poster maps. The DD one was 17x22 and covered the whole domain. It's monochrome, but it's a full domain.

Hinterworlds was the full sector map, as well, but was, IIRC, 16x21.

Note that the CT Solomani Rim had a letter sized map that could be blown up readably to poster size readably by a copy shop. Same for the sectors in the CT Alien Modules, and the MT Alien modules. (The scans, however, not so much.)

The Judges Guild CT sectors had poster maps as well, but the JG poster maps are position and routes only.

Paranoia Press had "posters" in The Beyond and Vanguard Reaches - 11"x17" (B&W and limited detail)

GDW's MT Astrogator's Guide had Diaspora - 11"x17" as well (full color!)

Now that Travellermap.com is up, why can't that be used to create custom maps of any sector you wanted?

There's a lot left to be desired from the TM maps. They don't have titles or legends (on the wish list). The rendering isn't smart enough to move labels around to prevent overlap (e.g. names and bases in adjacent hexes). The maps are intentionally a fairly classic look and don't try and innovate with new ways of displaying the data.

It would be technically possible add a button to TM that would link you to a print-on-demand service automagically - with FFE approval, of course. BUT... I think it would be a disincentive to the Traveller licensees like 13 Mann and Mongoose who are trying to support their businesses by selling posters. (That's why when you're visiting e.g. the Marches TM has a link to the Mongoose book at the bottom of the screen). And we want to see that innovation from licensees - there's plenty of room for improvement. 13 Mann's Marches poster is beautiful and packed with data. Even the relatively classic-looking Mongoose map packs have subtle touches like the rings on the Gas Giant glyph.
