The most common recent reference to Techno Mages is to Babylon 5.

They were mentioned in the main television series.

They were front and center in Crusade.

AFAIK, they have nothing to do with any aspect of Traveller, although there is nothing stopping anyone from including them or something similar to them in their game.

In B5, Techno Mages are individuals who present technology in the context of the trappings of magic and sorcery.

In the Traveller New Era setting there were TEDs - technologically elevated dictatorships - people who ruled planets by controlling the only high tech items - usually weapons,or the means of food/air/water/energy production.
It was also suggested that there would be worlds where people with psionic powers could rule in a similar way...

and welcome aboard Travellerchick

I've never heard of Techno-mages either. Maybe they were somewhere in TNE?

And yes, welcome aboard!

Obviously her GM is introducing Techno-mages into his TU.
Like Jame et al have said there is no CANON response to Techno-mages in the OTU.
BUT, I don't see why someone can't make their use of technology more Theatric. Whether it works or not is up to how the GM thinks the people of his universe would react.
I could see on lower tech level worlds that someone who could shroud their technology well enough could pull off the equivelant of the three card monty on the local yokels.

One of my favorite Traveller adventures, Divine Intervention, presents a world ruled by a high-tech theocracy. The ruler lives in a palace that floats around the planet on grav modules, but the populace thinks it's divine magic. Good stuff!

Where I think some of the confusion lies is with a Challenge article that dealt with Hard Times/TNE entitled Wizards which basically outlined different alternatives than your standard TED.

Found the Reference: Issue#46: "just like magic: witches and wizards in megatraveller"

Hunter, any chance we could get a Challenge Magazine Index and a JTAS Index mounted somewhere on the CofI?

Tech-Mage?

"Any sufficently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." -- Arthur C. Clarke, writer-philosopher.

"Those who don't understand technology are unable to distinguish it from magic." -- Florence Ambrose, engineer-spacehand.

Suggestion: Multiply the TL of the observer (TLO) by two and add one to determine what "sufficiently advanced technology" could be considered "magic" by that observer (TLM). Some values for TLM might become ridiculously high, but DM's for related skills may be applied.
