Tell Me About Your Character

It felt so good when the British Royal Space Navy finally reduced them to a slowy expanding ball of plasma.
:D

I had a character once, a rogue like a party-oriented Harry Mudd. He had a cheesy irish accent, though, and was hacked to death by one PC while the others watched.

I don't do accents anymore. :(

There are other reasons why I said Hindi though...
think of Shugilis(is that correct?) and Brahmans, shugilis and indian -spicy- cooking

What's more northern india had an expanding empire several thousand years BC -the arya- from which the Hindi caste system derived, and the vilani are organized in castes.
In my mind it always sounded right that Grandfather took it's specimen from Northern india during that period...
BTW (I don't want to be blasphemous) but the wr between The indian gods and the indian demons could as well be memory of Grandfather's war with it's children...
Hope I wasn't boring

that reminds me of the sub-Von Daniken BS document "Ancient Nuclear Blasts" that floats around the 'net. Total cod of course, but good game material.

I've aways thought of the Vilani as being kinda Sumerian.

Let's talk a short bit about Zolomion Shoul -but not so much I am still in active service after close to fifteen years of wandering...
To make it short, I am quite able to survive in most conditions, in spite of ageing effects, and can handle most atmosphere and spaceships of reasonable size from maintenance to piloting, including some parts of design. Also had to use several sorts of weapons, from bow to lasers: the less the better but some do not give an option.
The main point of this is a good joke: we had to rush out of Regina subsector for whatever reason, and I was piloting the Scout we had grabbed on the instant... too much rush, and I baddly mixed the navigation and piloting data... the Scout became a small nova of its own and I was 'jumped' away in my vacc, hanging over Regina itself... I was lucky enough to be rescued. I never heard of the three fellows that were with me...
Now you know where the motto comes from ;)

My first and favorite character (through all the games incarnations) was a CT Scout.

It started with a poor set of characteristics. We had just gotten the game so we used the fail a survival roll, start a new character, so...

"Bad luck on the rolls"

"Yeah, oh well cycle him through Scouts till he dies and try again." I wanted something kick-butt cool, a Marine or maybe a Merchant captain with a ship.

Several rolls later...

"I can't believe it, seven terms and he's still alive, in fact he's kinda good now." Having picked up a ton of skills, rounding out most of the bad attributes, and making most of the aging rolls.

He mustered out with Edu +2, a Blade, a Gun, a Scout Ship, and cr130,000. Fantastic. The party had a ship, and I had a very nice character who could out-pilot anybody!

I think of him as my "Accidental Scout"

"Hi, I'm looking for the Marine Recruiting Officer" says the gangly, awkward, youth in the very out of style, worn, coveralls, who couldn't read the sign outside the office.

"This is the IISS Office son, but I can see you are too good for the Marines. You want to be appreciated then the only branch of the service for you is the Scouts. Have a seat and let me fill in the application for you."

I took the word generation tables, listed all English, French and Spanish sounds then what sounds existed in Vilani. Based on similiarities I filled in the gaps in letters with the closest sounds they did have.
And then I typed out a phrase and it sounded kind of Germanic or Russian. It might be Babylonian, I have never heard that spoken

Well, here's my character. Her name is Tanya 'Tiny' O'Rourke and she's currently an Engineer aboard the Lucky Star in a Classic Traveller game using GRIP: 'Hefry'.

This is her in Jedi guise but she obviously doesn't carry a Lightsabre in the Traveller universe. This was a concept illustration I did in preparation for a Jedi Knight II: Outcast model but never got round to making it =(

Enjoy,

Paraquat Johnson is an intergallactic man of mystery. A former Imperial Marine commando, he spent some time in the service cross training with the Naval Intelligence branch. Now he is a free-lance black ops operative. He can do your dirty deeds, but he's not dirt cheap.

Paraquat's home planet is a feudal technocracy. The planet was originally controlled by native merchant families. Then contact with the Imperium was made. The influx of offworld technology was funnelled through the merchant families. Each family received the exclusive rights to products in a certain category. Over time, it became common for the merchant families to name offspring after products it controlled. Paraquat's family received the rights to chemical products.

Paraquat primarily works in the Spinward Marches. He maintains an office of sorts on Mora, but he's so busy travelling around the sector, he hardly ever has time to go there anymore. He has an assistant, Anastacia Beaverhausen, who forwards messages and job offers to him as best she can. He also has a string of contacts at space ports up and down the Spinward Main. People looking for him can leave a message with these contacts, if they can find out who they are.

I always remember the ex-Army character played by the 'shoot to kill' player. After the party had managed to engineer the explosive meltdown of a fusion plant (by pinching part of the cooling system to fix their ship,) he was (of course) the one who got caught in the blast when the plant went up (the other, more sensible PC's were long gone over the horizon.) After a time he said "my character was carrying two grenades. Did they explode?", to which the answer was "(sigh) You were at Ground Zero of a multi-megaton nuclear explosion. They probably did explode, but I don't think anyone noticed."

What!?!?!

The Bilani were lifted from Babylonia?

If i'm right (and i'm often not)Ancient Babylonia was in present day Iraq.

ALL IS CLEAR

The genes of Saddam Hussein course through the blood of the Vilani, this explains everything!

Hmmm. As a constant ref, (I play other games but it seems I'm still the only one on my block who 'buys' Traveller) I have few characters to call me own...

Well there was that bald one armed purple skinned Zhondani Agent character I played but that was.. well...

heh. then a friend of mine who was a Conan fan, and thus played a Barbarian.

my current circle of would-be and former players have produced, in just a year, a baker's dozen of memorable characters.

Tom Jackson. -- After the player generates a homeworld with a population of maybe a 100 and starport of X, THEN keeps rolling performance on his skills. My friend decided to base his character on Jack 'Hunter' Thompson. This player sure could pretend to be drunk well. One game session the party never got out of the bar where they were supposed to meet their patron.

Angus MacDuff -- A very chequered Career. players homeworld was a high tech asteroid belt with a law level of 0. He figured his character grew up on a pirate base. He became the blac sheep of the family by taking the Law Enforcement career. (Angus! what'ya Doing joining the Revenoo?) switched to rogue halfway along and ended up with a soc-1 a high dex, bluff, JoT and little else. The player played this Jury-rig genius, and VERY wanted felon to the hilarious hilt.

There were some others:
Several players who thought Comp - 5 allowed them to do whatever they wanted with computers. One nearly killed the party by messing with the anti-hijack program in the midst of calcuations for jump. The other kept trying to hack into the port authority from information Kiosks.

The guy who 'injured out' of the scholar career. We figure he's got a 'GH' imbedded in his forhead.

The player who wanted to be a young combat expert and instead ended up with an ex military, ex police ex government, aging Noble with a rep for dueling. I think we called him Count Killemall

Then there was the guy who failed at everything. his character's quote "...but I'm not bitter."

Garf.
