The Backwards Mask

Only on CD-Rom as a pdf.?
No dead tree version?
Dead trees cost a {crude term for defecatory product}load of money to generate and stock. The CD-ROM will give you PDFs for more than a mere handful of books - possibly dozens of them - for the price of a single one. If you get the CD-ROM, and feel that you need a dead tree version, you can always take it to Kinko's or Staples and have them print and bind it for you - it won't cost more than about 50% more than the original print release would have.

Hopefully FFE will be making those PDFs available standalone too, as I'm sure many of us with complete(ish) TNE collections would love the new material.

For that matter, I hope the Pilot's Guide to the Caledon Subsector makes it to Drivethru at some point.

Alas, but I so enjoyed the first two books in dead tree format. And I agree with ShannonA, I don't really need a CD of stuff I've Already got. Maybe a stand alone pdf...

I logged into Traveller Freeport and low and behold, The Backward's Mask was available as a Word document for download. Purporting to be the origianal document by Paul Brunnette. Just letting everone know.

Hmmm - I wonder if that's the 'original' or the 'alternate' version as touted on the second TNE CD-ROM.

The news release I got from FFE says both versions are included. I'm so busy nowadays I haven't the time to read them!

So, uh, anyone know if my guess about a super-laser was right?

It does not matter much - it's bad either way. The setting/tone/level deviates massively from the two published books and is overall far less interesting to read/rather boring.

Cool! Even better maybe, my inbox just dumped a deal on the whole trilogy from GDW through DriveThruRPG:

TNE Novel Trilogy

Regular $11.92, on sale for $7.45. I think I'll have to snag that. I only ever read the first iirc. Though I seem to recall some reviews of the second being not so good.

Hmm, wait a sec, is the amazon one also the full trilogy? And cheaper?...

...no, looks like just the 3rd novel. Good price though. Looks like the GDW offering on DTRPG also has the original manuscript for "The Backwards Mask" included, so it's a quad-trilogy ;) Alternate endings for those parallel universe settings :D

Thank you, Far-Trader.

Amazon's edition of the Backwards Mask is the official third book, via Marc Miller.
If you notice on Drive Thru.. the book cover is the same, but, the names, and stories are different.
(I think you just said that.. I may be repeating you, apologies if I did)

Having read Matthew Carson's edition of The Backwards Mask, I feel he exposes the reader to a more in-depth awareness of the characters and the reasoning behind what happens in the story.

Overall, being prior military, I felt it had the camaraderie that is found when one is in that situation well represented, plus, it is a fun story that is enjoyable to read.

I know I am no critic, just another lover of Sci-Fi books out there, but, I hope this one gets the props it deserves.

Backwards Mask 1-Year Anniversary

Hello everyone,

Today (March 1st) marks the 1-year anniversary of the Backwards Mask release! I'd like to give thanks to everyone who revisted New Era with me and this book. The support you've shown this past year has been incredible.

We're not done yet.

Until next time...

Si vales, valeo.

While browsing Barnes and Noble.com on my son's nook I found that both the Carson version and the "original" Brunette version are available as a single download, better that just the "authorized" version on Amazon and DTRPG, and it's the same price!

Reminiscing

And then there’s Red Sun’s real name. Coeur D’Esprit seems to be a thinly veiled reference to esprit de'corp . And Coeur means “heart” in French. I guess it was meant to show that she was supposed to embody the spirit or heart of the RCES/TNE. I don’t know. For my own part it doesn’t look particularly good when you see it on paper, and it’s hard to spell consistently. Trust me…I know.

Actually the author misspelled her name throughout the first MS as "Couer." I told him, "If your intent is that her name be the French for 'heart,' it's 'coeur,' not 'couer.'" In the subsequent MS it was changed to "Coeur," so I assume that was his intent.

The novels were unusual, because they were not GDW's project. They were commissioned and bankrolled by one of our printers, who are the ones who hired the author. Obviously they used GDW resources, but we didn't have much control. The printer had its own timelines that we had to meet and do what we could in the time allowed. So GDW never actually put out any novels, but sort of a franchisee did using our name. I "edited" them, if that is the right word, because there was only the opportunity to excise the worst, but not actually improve anything that could have been better. They read like young adult novels to me, and I think that's kind of what the printer was aiming for.
