The Blue Smoke: Yacht Design

Well, that would be waaay better than the ship trailing a cloud of blue smoke in atmosphere due to it burning oil like an old, battered pick up truck.

Well now, the BEST barbeque comes from Texas !! Y'all ought to know that. :D

My vote for the chef would be Bobby Flay XXIII.

:D

BTW, good to see you again, Baron S.

Well I must say that the best barbacoa I had, bar none, was in San Antonio. And a brisket you could eat with a spoon.

There's some decent places here in NYC, but you gotta pay, is all.

If you start with a planetoid, then you can build an 'adobe' starship with a large, open central hearth and a rustic interior.
Is that 'Texas' enough?

With a pool (oh please, oh please?)? As long as we don't bring along those d****d rattlesnakes and 'skeeters. Or Hoover Hogs (armadillos), either. :D

Oh well, back to the thread - Baron, what kind of vessel is your customer wanting? Something for business, personal piloting, or something to entertain many guests?

Some Thoughts...

From the Desk of Sir Magnus Baron von Thornwood, KOSM, LCDR IN (Ret.):

Dear Sir:

It has come to my attention that your fine Consortium has bid for the Construction of Our Mustering Out Yacht and so I send to you the following list of general requirements with the understanding that your ship wrights may have grand and useful suggestions which We will be happy to take under advisement.

1. Any hard points should mount a Traditional Triple Turret containing: one LASER, one Missile Launcher, and one Sandcaster.

2. Would like to have at least a couple of Low Berths.

3. The Master's Suite will need certain Security Features to be discussed.

4. A specialized Air-Lock (variable pressure setting and restraint systems).

5. An EVA Engineering External Access Locker and Engineer Assistant Robot.

6. The Thornwood Famili Arms, including Baronial (von Thornwood, the 'von' being very important to me personally, as it is an Honor Title) and Knight of Order of the Spinward Marches Heraldry (the Famili Knighthood), I have an additional Award of Knighthood (Honor), but have yet to informed on the nature of the Award of Knighthood itself. I bring it up merely as it may added later. Thornwood Family Heraldry: Escutcheon Sable, (thorn tree) Sanguine, Border Vert (British Racing Green)

7. Secret Safe in all Staterooms.

8. A BUMPING SOUND SYSTEM and wicked light show.

9. A Hydroponics Section.

14. Large cargo bay.

15. Extremely well stocked Ship's Locker.

16. All Alphanumeric marking in both Anglic and Vilani Serif (see mr boulton's fine site)

17. Art for the Starship should have an aetheric wispy look.

18. Serious potentially lethal Anti-Hijack systems.

19. Ship's Vehicles, as per standard?

20. Model/3 fib+ Computer, with various Tactical and Miscellaneous Programs to make up for lack of Crew skills, and to comply with certain Ministry Standards.

21. Any suggestions your fine wright might have.

We look forward to hearing from you soon. Please forward all correspondence to His Majesty's Imperial Ministry of Intelligence, Department 6, Regina/Regina (SM1910).

I suggest that the yacht have a bar and lounge for the comfort of its guests.

And something for the "comfort" of its "guests" would also not be amiss.

Urgent Update.

Magnus *sends an update*

Dear Sir:

A Co-worker in the Office (Agent T.), has suggested that I look into look into the following:

1. Extra large Power Plant capable of 150%+ standard need.

2. At least Jump-2 capable with good G Acceleration (3+?).

3. Pop up turrets, and a Drop Torpedo, not Jump, merely a quick drop and run Torp.

4. A Black Globe or cloak.

5. Lush interior, silks, and Art Deco preferred. Excellent Staterooms for Crew.

6. Stress Crew comfort in Stations and Living Areas.

7. MILSPEC Sensors and Counter-Measures (internal and external)

As My Work for HIM requires a certain covertness, we would ask that you take this into account in Your Response.

Again, thank you for your time on the project and look forward to hearing from you.

See above re: correspondence.

Hey! Wait just a Regina minute there. Was there an open call for bids? I didn't get it and this is a specialty area of building for Journeyman Design Bureau.

...We look forward to hearing from you soon. Please forward all correspondence to His Majesty's Imperial Ministry of Intelligence, Department 6, Regina/Regina (SM1910).

Heck, our main offices are on Regina! And we have a dedicated 600ton capable slip in the yards.

:)

Not looking to horn in on SHDC work, they do great stuff too. But I might run a design through the office just on spec. We have lots of standard designs of course but our private yachts are usually one offs custom tailored to the owner's needs and desires.

*checks in box and is surprised*

From the Desktop of Baron Sir Magnus von Thornwood, KOSM, LCDR IN (Ret.):

Dear Sirs:

While in fact We are looking into a Custom one-off, We do have very serious concerns due to the Nature of Our Work for HIM, and SHDC does come rather well connected We hear.

That aside there are Matters of Honor in taking bids out and well the truth is We have yet to see Specs or Drafts from either Design Bureaux, so as for now it appears there is nothing to compare.

Perhaps you could forward some cut-sheets to My Office and reference the above bid for requirements.

Again, thank you for expressing your desire to fill this bid, and look forward to further correspondence.

Re: 13. Pimp, comfy, ergonomic systems on the Bridge, it should really comfortable, decreasing stress during combat/hijack situation.

Your lordship, while an ergonomic and efficient Bridge has many merits, if I may suggest, an overly comfortable bridge might not portray the image of a proper Imperial Noble. If you will forgive for being so bold, nothing quite makes the statement of Nobility like a fully officered and crewed starship, and a "pimp, comfy" bridge might imply that your lordship is required to pilot the vessel like a common Merchanter or scruffy Scout.

An ergonomic and utilitarian Bridge, on the other hand, would clearly establish that if the Noble owner were to be seen to pilot the vessel, he would be expressing a supremely skillful competence, thus increasing the respect of his own crew and any observers.

With all due respect.

A Response from Sir Magnus.

Dear Mr. Downs:

While your comments do merit some attention, unlike most Nobles, sir, I understand the Difference between Master of the Vessel and Commander of the Vessel. I, sir, am merely Master of the Vessel and already have fine (and I do mean Fine) Former Imperial Naval Line Officer on the Short List for Commander.

In addition, multiple studies show that an Ergonomic Environment produces positive morale with the Crew. A happy cared for Crew is a hard working Crew. This is a Famili Tradition I plan on following, My Service and Skills are far better used than trying to impress persons with my Bridge Skills. I will have People for that and I pay Them Well!

Thank you again for your concerns,
We are always looking for ways to improve on the Design of the Starship.

Honoured Sir Baron von Thornwood,

It would be my great pleasure to arrange a private tour of our Regina facilities at your convenience if you desire it. And I am happy to forward full references and a prospective first draft design for your comments.

While we are not as connected as the good Baron Saarthuran we have a long history of custom restoration of small classic designs and a recent expansion into larger projects, including a full line of specialty luxury yachts from our Knight class through one offs suitable for Ducal needs.

We fully understand, accept, concur, and even endorse your reasons for dealing with SHDC and offer our services only as an alternative.

References and prospective design to follow.

Yours,

Sir Daan Biirns

Out of character, is there a specific rules set you want this for? CTB2, CTB5, MT, T4, TNE/FF&S1, and T20 are all doable, though CTB2 or B5 is most likely to be done in short order :) The others would take more time, and interest, I'm on a bit of a CT kick at the moment. Can't promise flashy deckplans but could probably put something playable together. I imagine you'd like deckplans.

Well, I hope Baron Saarthuran won't mind the competition, he'll kick my pants art wise I expect :)

CT it is then. I roughed up a quick and dirty Baronial Yacht in B2. B5 would come out similar. Close enough for this to serve as a first pass for feedback on specific changes and directions.

First your design requirements addressed in point form:

Part 1

1. Any hard points should mount a Traditional Triple Turret containing: one Beam Laser, one Missile Launcher, and one Sandcaster.

Presumably you’ll want the maximum hard point allotment per regulations.

2. Would like to have at least a couple of Low Berths.

Possibly as part of a medical facility?

3. The Master's Suite will need certain Security Features to be discussed.

Naturally.

4. A specialized Air-Lock (variable pressure setting and restraint systems).

Quite doable.

5. An EVA Engineering External Access Locker and Engineer Assistant Robot.

We can provide the EVA locker but are not engaged in robotics at this time. We can recommend suppliers.

Of course.

7. Secret Safe in all Staterooms.

Including Crew staterooms?

8. A BUMPING SOUND SYSTEM and wicked light show.

Interesting. Including live artist performance space?

9. A Hydroponics Section.

A nice feature. Am I correct in presuming this is life support supplemental and special fresh food oriented, or is it more an arboretum recreational space?

10. Fuel scoops and purification systems.

Standard for streamlined designs and naval rated drives.

11. Streamlining.

An excellent choice.

12. Chrome.

Of course.

13. Pimp, comfy, ergonomic systems on the Bridge, it should really comfortable, decreasing stress during combat/hijack situation.

Standard.

14. Large cargo bay.

Can you better define your needs here? Most of our Noble clients only require enough for an extensive baggage allowance for crew and passengers. Would you need more? Other features may have to be sacrificed or scaled back.

15. Extremely well stocked Ship's Locker.

Standard.

16. All Alphanumeric marking in both Anglic and Vilani Serif (see mr boulton's fine site)

Standard.

17. Art for the Starship should have an aetheric wispy look.

I can but try.

18. Serious potentially lethal Anti-Hijack systems.

Standard.

19. Ship's Vehicles, as per standard?

Standard, typically a Speeder or two and/or an armored Grav Limo.

20. Model/3 fib+ Computer, with various Tactical and Miscellaneous Programs to make up for lack of Crew skills, and to comply with certain Ministry Standards.

Standard at this level. Though specifics of your Ministry Standards and Crew limitations will have to be clarified.

21. Any suggestions your fine wright might have.

If occasional light cargo capacity is desired and range can be sacrificed we suggest making 1 parsec of jump fuel dismountable tankage. This will allow 40tons of cargo space when limiting jumps to 2 parsecs and normal 3 parsec performance the rest of the time.

Part 2

A Co-worker in the Office (Agent T.), has suggested that I look into look into the following:

1. Extra large Power Plant capable of 150%+ standard need.

Excess power is factored in.

2. At least Jump-2 capable with good G Acceleration (3+?)

Standard at this level is J3 3G.

3. Pop up turrets, and a Drop Torpedo, not Jump, merely a quick drop and run Torp.

Pop up turrets are a common option at this level for diplomatic reasons. Standard missile launchers are capable of handling a large variety of specialty ordnance, including fire and forget munitions, snooper missiles, and others. Would this suit your needs?

4. A Black Globe or cloak.

Black Globes are not available at this level. However space can be earmarked for installation as a contingency of you acquiring one.

Limited cloaking via Active Camo surface is standard.

Anti-psionic shielding is an available option for sensitive areas. It is cost prohibitive for whole ship application.

5. Lush interior, silks, and Art Deco preferred. Excellent Staterooms for Crew.

Standard.

6. Stress Crew comfort in Stations and Living Areas.

Standard.

7. MILSPEC Sensors and Counter-Measures (internal and external)

Standard at this level.

As My Work for HIM requires a certain covertness, we would ask that you take this into account in Your Response.

Standard at this level.

The game is afoot!

We of the SHDC always look forward to design competion and bid contract competions, and we particularly look forward to meeting other design teams! A lot of our designers are big Journeyman DB fans, and can't wait to dig in to "The Frontier Project" as they are calling it around prototyping. Now to find a good Yard nearby to produce. We would normally use the Mega-Yards at Sidur Ishki and ship to you but if it is a requirement to build local, we can plan or it.

We are certainly going to pull out all the stops to fit the client's needs, budget, and personality in a machine that will combine technology and high art.
