The Checklist.

So I was watching something or other aviation related the other day and I got to wondering does anyone out there have a walk around/checklist protocol for their TU?

Curious if anyone does and what mechanics they might use to let fate punish the sloppy?

Laterness,
Magnus.

Nope.

No, I meant more like the pre-flight walk around where the crew manning the vessel check up in to the landing gear spaces to make sure there's nothing leaking or stuck up in there. Pulling pins (the one with those long ass red ribbons on them) from weapons allowing them to be used, checking the various control surfaces. Stuff like that.

The other thing being the cockpit checklist, warming up the drives, checking with traffic control, making sure everything is green and sealed. Making sure you have the correct channels on the comm.

I am a real big fan of the Starport Authority column back in day. *shrugs* Plus I love detail like that.

I pretty much subsumed it into the 'cautious attempt/cross check' rules using the SoM.

If they didn't want to make a cautious task roll (for whatever reason) it was assumed that they were 'just ticking boxes' as opposed to triple checking everything by the numbers. If the uncertain roll went bad, something may happen or it may not. If they did a cautious roll (doubling the time taken) it dropped the task difficulty by one level (diff -> rout, rout ->simple). But even then, the rolls only came into effect when something important had/was happening - they were fleeing pirates, rushing to the resuce, had a bomb on board, had skimped on maintenance, etc. Deciding about whether to do it properly or do it quickly could have serious consequences.

Otherwise most of the 'non interesting' trips assumed that everything was done properly with no shortcuts. Of course they could always say they were doing detailed checks in case of a stowaway, tampering, whatever - but it didn't happen too often as it got boring after a while was skipped it as a assumption they did them (unless something was happening in which case it went back to the cautious/cross check rolls).

Exactly.

See and that is when you as Ref have hopefully kept up on the safety rolls in proper order and then after they have like real people, have got bored of doing pre-flight, nothing ever breaks, and that we all know is exactly when they do. In real life. We call them crashes usually.

yeah, they do "pre-flight" cvheecklists on the schoolbuses here so that if ANYTHING is wrong -- the bus is sent to the garage instead of being driven

as the safety of the kids is paramount

So it's a good idea

Only time I worry about it is when they don't have time. I presume 1 minute per 10 tons for the walk around, and I'm gonna add 1 minute per bridge ton for the bridge checklist.

Ok, here's what I came up with when I thought about a starship checklist.

Spaceframe
- hull integrity
- outer control surfaces
- ship's markings
Ground Gear
- landing gear
- exterior lighting
- exterior hatches
Life Support
- air recycling
- air distribution
- temperature control
- gravity systems
- food and water
- waste
Non-essential Systems
- vehicles
- ship's locker
- passenger support/purser services
- cargo
Power Plant
- fusion control systems
- main electrical distribution
- backup batteries
Bridge
- main control systems
- backup control systems
- communications
Avionics
- flight systems
Computer
- program integrity
Maneuver Drive
- thruster output
- thruster control
Jump Drive
- jump grid?
- zuchai crystals?
Sensors
- active focus systems
- passive scan systems
Ship's Weapons
- energy projection systems
- targeting systems
- onboard ammunition and sand

MegaTraveller talks about system crosschecks in the back of the Imperial Encyclopedia. But there isn't any real detail.

Hope that helps

My players always do a through check(even to see if someone hacked their computer while connected to the starport.).They even rp calling for clearance to leave. The only time I worry about them not ,s when they have to leave in a hurry.
