The Displaced Dynchia

Meteoric Assault

In JTAS#24 that was an intriguing 'contact' article by Peter Rasmussen The Dynchia (Pg.44-48), was for me a step in a new direction with genetically modified or enhanced humanoid race.

The concept of modified humanoids is compelling my mind with the shadowy hand of the ancients as thedeus ex machinafor the origin or creation story. Looking back I am wondering why it wasn't explored with more detail. I am sure other minor "altered" Human or humanoid races would exist in the traveller universe.

whenever I read about eugenics and genetic engineering or watch films such as Gattaca, or the cancelled TV series : Space above and Beyond" its the vitros or the Supermen of the fictional Gattaca world that could make such a interesting sidebar in traveller. I am aware T5 allows us the mechanics of tacking such questions.

Anyway getting back to the Dynchia I have always found the the Editor's post script "This article was prepared without reference to the Atlas of the Imperium, and the data given above will not completely agree with it. Referee's wishing to incorporate the Dynchia into their campaigns may modify this data as they see fit" is a real question.

Where to put such a thought provoking minor race, Often I have looked at the Traveller Map and speculated where I would place them? Rimward to the Zhodani Consulate? Coreward and Trailing of the Vargr Extents or perhaps a buffer state between the imperium and Vargr extents? Sometimes Maybe they should reside in the Margin Sector and Melande Sector as the author stated?

Yeah, I wandered around on this lazy sunday a bit ... thanks for being patient.

In the original Spinward Marches you will find a reference to the Imperium settling a world with biologically modified human colonists.

I'm looking at GURPS Traveller: Humaniti, and there is a sidebar on page 55 about the original location from the JTAS article.

In that book, they are placed in that book in the Leonidae Sector. Melantris (the Dyanchia homeworld) is placed between the Imperium, Solomani, and Hivers. The Comitia is noted to occupy the spinward-rimward quarter of that sector.

However, the Traveller Map places Melantris in hex 2733, near the Ithklur Aexzz, closer to trailing.

Here is the non-canon Traveller Wiki entry for this world:

. . . It is a member of the Dynchia Comitia in the Vestus Subsector of Reft Sector . . .

That is a significant change in location. The original JTAS #24 article placed them in what is today Subsector M of Leonidae. GT:Humaniti (in order to avoid canon-conflict) moved them to subsector P of Leonidae.

Both of those locations are clear across the Imperium relative to Reft Sector.

Even the T5SR puts them in Leonidae. Where's the source of this Reft sector business?

Whew. I thought at least for the Imperial sectors things were pretty settled.
