The Essentials

Yeah, Starfire is good, and great for what it does. I play it, too. The older stuff from the series. It deserves more press than it has gotten.

The Terran / Vilani game you mention is likely Imperium, and / or Invasion Earth boardgames.

The expanded careers came into CT with High Guard, Scouts and Mercenaries, (and you could include Merchant Prince in there, too.)

MT Uses them as a central / Optional concept in the main player's books.

GT: First In is excellent, but it's out of print (including the second printing) and copies on e-Bay are going for insane prices (as in over $100 US). If you can find a copy for the cover price though, snatch it up.

TTB or Starter Traveller, and a DGP CT adventure, CT magazine, or CT supplement for the task system.

If you want CT++, get MT PM for the CG improvements, task system, and/or the combat rules, but drop interrupts. MT Ref's Companion turns MT into a playable wargame, by using consolidated.

I'll have to keep my eyes open for G:First In or G:Interstellar Wars when it comes out. I leafed through G: Traveller yesterday at my game store - it looked interesting. I have fond memories of GURPS, but the character generation could get intense...and I didn't find it that hard to have a character with insane skill levels. Still, simply as a resource G: Traveller looks amazing.

Aramis: "DGP CT adventure, CT magazine, or CT supplement?" I'm assuming CT is Classic Traveller - who's DGP? I think I have a tentative answer to the task system question without it getting too insane, but I'm curious to see how this was addressed.

Ptah: Thanks for the link! Honestly I found the battle reports a little confusing...but that's no doubt 'cause I've never seen High Guard. It looked like it has great potential though. Certainly with my above campaign idea I'd need to be able to handle starship battles. (I can wing it fairly well, but I know my players...eep)

The good news (for me) is I just grabbed 0-8 on e-bay, so hopefully within a week or so I'll be able to intelligently discuss a campaign.

CatKnight,

DPG = Digest Group Publication. They made some of the best Traveller supplements. They made several supplements for CT and MT (heck, they practically *ran* MT), and produced the Travellers' Digest magazine.

However, since the DPG copyrights are in limbo (no, don't ask), there will never be reprints. If you want the old DGP material, you have to go find the old DGP material. And it ain't cheap. Since you are new to Traveller, I would suggest just ignoring the DGP stuff, at least for now.

High Guard = Book 5. So, since you bought Books 0-8, you now have High Guard. (Some people will also include Adventure 5 in the definition of High Guard, but don't worry about that.)

Really, I suggested it solely for the Task System. T2300/2300AD has a variant of it, and MT is the DGP task system.

Daryen massively underrates DGP's role in MT. There was no "Practically" to it. They collated MT. GDW published it. FSSOTSI showed what happened when GDW tried to do MT.... ;)

Could be from Downport.

Since I have no Travellers' Digests from the CT era, I couldn't know that. I thought it looked basically the same ...

For an alternative task system, check out this thread, in this very forum.

And as said before, definitely check out the Modern House Rules and CT+ threads here abouts.

- Neil.
