The "Oh No!" Bag

Anyone mention duct tape yet? I mean, what can't you use it for?

Makes a dandy vacc suit patch, fixes the crappy vinyl crash couches on the ship, good for leaking pipes, and its fun to slap strips on to the vargr crewmate's back as he walks past and hear his howling when he rips it off.

At least a body pistol and couple magazines. With that you might be able to get any items you forgot to pack already. Or at least shoot an alien squirrel for lunch.

Hmmm. A pistol is mostly a "survival accessory" if you're going to be dealing with people.

Now in a wilderness situation, a survival kit would likely include a small caliber rifle for hunting food animals, a'la the airforce survival rifle that floats.

A pistol's not so good for bringing down small game for food.

A good survival kit might contain a gauss shotgun with recyclable ammo and a solar panel for recharging it.

BTW. if you want to make a good survival kit, read "The complete zombie survival guide", it has some good tips, in addition to a lot of BS...

There was a survival kit detailed in an early issue of JTAS, copied in Marooned/Marooned Alone: http://wiki.travellerrpg.com/Survival_Kit.

2114 EDIT: The wiki has moved, so I've updated the link.

Oh yeah! Read that right after World War Z and the Morningstar books. Read Day By Day Armageddon yet?

I thought the bug-out bag had to be the size of a small daypack. A shotgun won't fit in there, but shotshells for squirrel hunting with a 9mm or .45 will. That .22 rifle might if the bag was big enough, but I'd still stick a heavier caliber pistol in there for backup. One can never have too many guns in his Bag of Infinite Holding!

The powder can light a fire and preserve the meat. The gun can signal others. I can shoot someone else who has a better gun if I stalk him and ambush him before he does the same to me (risky, but I've found most people don't have a clue about them when it comes to that sort of thing in RL).

I can use it to break into a house or store and get more supplies. Jack a car from someone. Shoot out the tire as they go by so I can jack their car after they stop provided they don't wreck it. If they do then I drag their body out into the road and jack the guy who stops to help.....

Yes there was and here it is for those of you who don't have it since I wrote it all out to hand out to players with ships (required to carry one per passenger)....with a most excellent survival gun I might add.... (all credit is acknowledged to GDW, FFE, and whoever it is supposed to go to, so don't sue me. Please.)

SURVIVAL KIT (individual) 500Cr.

Safety regulations require that one of these kits be carried for each
passenger aboard all starships.

Each kit contains:
Filter/Respirator Combination: Negligible wt.
Water: Eight half-liter cans distilled water. 6kg.
Food Bars: A thirty day supply of dietary supplements and food concentrates for one
person. 1.5kg.
Cold-Light Sticks: 30 sticks lasting 24 hrs. each. .3kg.
Comm-link/Beacon: A combination long range radio (500 km) and signaling
transponder. 1.5kg.
Flares: 4 per kit. Emit a colored smoke and bright light for 15 minutes. .25kg each
Rifle, Survival: A light-weight rifle which disassembles into three basic
components: barrel, action, and hollow stock in which the other two may be
stored. A five round magazine inserts into the rifle, forward of the trigger guard. One round is fired per pull of the trigger. The weapon comes with 300 rounds
of ammunition and is treated as a carbine. 2.5kg (including ammunition).
Tarpaulin: 10x 6, waterproof and bright orange. .2kg.
Cord: 2mm diameter x 300 m length, suitable for snares, and so on.
Rope: 1 cm diameter x 50 m length, suitable for climbing and so on.
Grappling Hook: A collapsible, lightweight three-pronged hook.
Climbing Spikes & Hammer: 24 lightweight metal spikes for climbing steep rock
faces, and a hammer for driving them in. Cord, rope, hook, spikes, hammer: 1.5 kg.
First Aid Kit: A small package of bandages, splints, drugs, and other equipment
for field treatment of minor injuries. I kg.
Machete: Equivalent to blade. .35kg.
Binoculars: . I kg.
Sheltersuit: A loose fitting garment with facemask, gloves, and hood which can
be used with a battery operated heat pump to provide protection from all but the
most extreme conditions of heat and cold.
Heat Pump: Used with the above. When activated, the self-contained battery is
good for an average 30 days continuous operation. The heat pump can also be used
to heat or cool a shelter, such as a tent or small cave, but its duration is reduced
considerably. Suit and pump: 2 kg.
Water Purification Equipment: A small distilling apparatus, filters, and chemical
purification tablets, capable of removing harmful components from water and rendering
it potable. 1 kg.
Raft: An inflatable raft capable of keeping one person (or 120 kgs) afloat in
water. .5kg.
Miscellaneous: A compass, fishhooks and line, matches, etc. Negligible weight.
Survival Manual: A hand held portable microfilm reader with self-contained
instructions for survival under many adverse conditions. .I kg.
Carrying Case: 50 x 40 x 15 cm .1 kg. Total kit weight is 23 kilograms.

Which reminds me....a roadflare or two is a nifty thing when travelling even in your groundcar. If you get lost they will set nearly anything on fire (I would just light the nearest, biggest pine tree or the spare tire) in any weather so you can make a nice highly visible smoke signal.

Don't forget how handy they are for putting out the lights in your house and turning of the radio and tv.

Grenades have many uses too, they can be used to clear the brush out of a ditch, to clear culverts, and as signaling devices. They can be used to "trap" large game by use of simple trip wires, and even be used to remove difficult people, um, obstacles I meant to say. The grenade is a multipurpose tool just right for many jobs, ask any mercenary or housewife.

Duke, from Doonesbury, liked to use mortars to soften up the area before going hunting.
