So if I needed a background on the traveller universe, where would I look? Is there a web page that gives timeslines and backgrounds? The T20 book seems to lack much of this.

You've got 25 years of stuff--any former Traveller stuff is usable.

Personally, I would recommend two of the MegaTraveller books: The Imperial Encyclopedia and The Rebellion Sourcebook. The former covers most of the major topics, with timelines, etc. While the second book dealt primarily with the Rebellion (which is apparently not going to be in the "official" T20--correct me if I'm wrong), it contains some great information on the various domains, how imperial society works, and naval depots, of all things. You can probably find them easily enough on E-Bay or in the bargain bin.

There's actually a bit of info right here on the Citizens of the Imperium web site. Go to the main page, and look right under the link to Discussion Forums, you'll see a heading labelled "Library Data" click on that and you'll find a fair number of topics.

I'd suggest the currently in-print reprint edition of Classic Traveller titled "The Classic Supplements" which has most of the background for the original game universe.

Of course there will also be a T20 background book on the Gateway Domain coming out in the next few months that will fill a lot of the bill

That lack of information is intentional. This book was meant as rules-only, with all the follow-on books being extremely rules-light/setting-rich, much like the original (CT) Traveller game.

For background information, in book form, the best bets are MegaTraveller's Imperial Encyclopedia and Player's Handbook. If you can find them, the original LBBs of the Library Data books and the Traveller Adventure book, provide a great deal of useful information (although, if you have MTs Imperial Encyclopedia, you'll have all of the stuff in the Library Data LBBs).

Also, use Google to look up "Traveller Webring" and "TML." You'll have a whole lot more information than you'll know what to do with.
