The Upcoming New OGL 1.1 vs. OGL 1.0a and Cepheus

First, thank you for posting here. That is very much appreciated.

Second, honestly, the best thing that you/Mongoose can do is to update the SRD without using the OGL. I don't know what you would replace it with (IANAL, so I don't have useful suggestions), and I am not sure if that would require any textual changes to the SRD. But, that all said, the absolute best thing that Mongoose can do to help Cepheus is to reissue the SRD without the OGL. The second best thing is to make sure the new license states it is perpetual AND irrevocable so we don't have to go through this again.

That is my direct request to Mongoose to do for third-party publishers.

Thank

Until WotC "makes their move" ... business as usual, nothing to see here?

Whistling past the graveyard full of undead, much?
LOL.

Not at all. Plans have been made. There's just not much point in making a deal before there's a need for a deal.

We've been through this before.

Well, Matt is absolutely right. As it stands currently, all of this is speculation.

The leak may or may not be real. The leak may be a trial balloon by WoTC. WoTC may yet see how poorly this is being received. Lots of possibilities.

When/if WoTC makes their move, then we'll have something solid to work around. At that stage, we'll see what needs to be done.
Well for what the final 1.1 will look like, yes sir absolutely ! But their intentions and actions are clear, if not to we consumers at large, certainly to those who actively produce 5e material. Ryan Dancy (who currently works at AEG) and the other panelists at the YouTube livestream I just came from were talking about the letters THEY received from WotC with special licenses indicating specified % and terms for their particular IP. Of course they had not signed, but the specifics they did relate were in line with the 9000 word monstrosity. Also Brian Williams (I think that be his name) who was the legal counsel for WotC set Ryan Dancy's ideas into proper legal terminology that is the 1.0a license, is working with his current gaming clients to do that round table determine actions to take and/or produce a new sort of OGL across gaming, for those who want buy in. So that specific leaked document sure. But if one says, nah nothing at all is happening in that range of possibilities, here and now, that may be disingenuous or at the least a little too hopeful?😟

If you've got contingency plans, ready to execute ... you've been paying attention and are ahead of the curve.

If however you were being complacent and taking a "this can't be real" attitude ... well ... like the old saying says:
Those who do not anticipate the future are doomed to resent it.

Keeping your powder dry in case of emergency = prudent.
Throwing your powder away because you're convinced (or have been conned into thinking) you won't need it = foolhardy.

Your first post did not make clear on which side of that divide you intended to come down on.
Thankfully, your follow up clarified that you're keeping your OPTIONS open, rather than keeping your EYES shut.

Just remember that it helps to "buckle up" BEFORE the accident happens, rather than AFTER ... ;)

I had you specifically in mind. Another reason for my hue and cry.
You deserve heaps of credit for giving this issue the visibility it has taken on here.(y)

I think there is enough evidence out there to say this is real. Anyone who is "not worried" about it is not actually paying attention.

Getting back to Matt and Mongoose for a moment. Irrespective of whether WOTC backs down any or not, the fact of the matter is that WOTC have still shown their cards and what they want to do. So, even if they don't immediately pull OGL 1.0a, you have to assume it is going away. If your entire game is dependent on it, then, sure you can hope for the best. But that isn't the case for the Traveller SRD and Mongoose. No matter what WOTC does, or when they do it, the best thing Mongoose can do to help Cepheus is to release a new SRD that does not include the OGL 1.0a. It isn't panicking to do so. It isn't an overreaction. It is recognizing where things are going, sooner or later, and just taking care of it now.

No one else can do this, and no one who wants to continue to use Cepheus can do anything until after this is done. Again, the absolute best thing Mongoose can do for Cepheus is to reissue the Traveller SRD without the OGL. The sooner the better.

Thank you.

Might I point out that WOTC, is currently trying to grab back the TSR trademark, so maybe They Sue Regularly is the mode they want to return to.

Stay tuned because WotC is making its announcement today. Join this livestream or YOUR favorite viewing option 1:30 PM Central time.
The Hindenburg is cliche', but still a neat touch:.

I want to point out that those that are trying to squat on the TSR trademark are morbidly repugnant, to an extreme level. They are so bad that pretty much everyone that is right now wanting to burn WOTC to the ground because of OGL 1.1 was actually rooting for WOTC to crush the squatters. So, please, let's not conflate the two issues.

I was always told "Prior Planning Prevents Poor Performance". Pretty much the same thing really.
Yes, also we were told similarly "poor planning equals poor performance." Plans though, yeah, when I built huge mansions in studio city, the plans were as thick as old phone books: plan detail, plan view, elevation, boilerplate ... etc.. It is no wonder why I like these games I guess. Always with a half page of cribbed notes, and a freehand drawing.

If Hasbro is going after the publishing companies, they are chasing the past.

As I understand it, they seem to have cancelled five video games, which means that future prospects are dim, as well as expansion, and whatever they've done to the He Man universe and the Transformers franchise.

They've finally jumped the shark with Magic card editions, so I don't really expect them to relent on exploring the Dungeons and trying to milk the Dragon, until there's a massive sales drop when the tail backlashes.

The Paizo website has crashed around 10 PM Central because...
They have announced the Open RPG Creative license aka ORC. Nice to see they have a sense of humor :ROFLMAO:
I cannot access the announcement because of the aforementioned crash, but here is a link to the Announcement:
Paizo Announces System-Neutral Open RPG License
but it is aleady on The Wayback Machine
(Archive.Org copy) Paizo Announces System-Neutral Open RPG License
Being by Brian Lewis, who did the Legalese of Ryan Dancy's wording is writing it. Paizo states THEY WILL go to court if need be to protect their products old and new.
Paizo (of course), Kobold Press, Green Ronin, Legendary Games have already agreed to use it when released.
SO ... Is the war over? Or has the revolution merely begun?

And even at this late hour REAL Lawyers are looking at it even at this late hour:

Hasbro/WotC opens (legal) fire on their community. 💥
Community deserts Hasbro/WotC en masse ... leaving Hasbro/WotC bereft of any targets to pillage besides themselves. 💣

"Your move, creep."

Yesterday was a very interesting day in the world of TTRPG. Who knows what today will bring... getting the leak from inside WotC about DDB subscriptions was dramatic, and clearly had an effect. But that announcement by Paizo... emotional. Like a trumpet blast that rallies the banners in times of crisis.

OK, let's get back to my request, as this makes it even easier:

1) It would be great if Mongoose commits to using the ORC in place of the OGL for their SRD now. (With obvious caveats that they have to see it first and always reserve the right to change their minds if there are problems or something like that. Really asking for just a general statement of intent.)

2) They rerelease their SRD using the ORC when the new license is finished. (Assuming the ORC license is acceptable.)

That'd be really awesome, actually!
