The USS Ronald Reagan

Would the carrier be better off sailing to an intact port with oil refining facilities (working ones) so it has a source of JP fuel? Perhaps building a supply line from working sources of oil (crude).

Just a thought.

Just a side note, both Nimitz, the first of her class, and Reagan, the latest of same, are currently in port in San Diego in (pretty much) adjoining docks.

As for a carrier (alone):

How big are the chances the Mexicans / Greenpeace / Whoever still has a bunch of missile-armed S-Boats around? Or maybe some Type 206/209 subs? And say a bunch of Harpoons? Those systems where sold to a lot of nations prior to WW II. Given that european navies in the 80s managed to "kill" a carrier task force more than once with a simulated "saturation attack" (At least getting the big ones) what are the chances a carrier has without it's AA cruisers?

Best use for a carrier would be "Texas" style - a giant power plant / mobile maintenance base. Depending on the manufacturing capabilities the ship (I asume it has things as a lathe on board) might be what a community needs to build the tools for building the tools that build civilisation.

Do some civilisation building instead of warfighting. Send out teams to investigate the rumor of "the carrier" or the carrier sends out rescue teams to bring in scientist (they'll need some fast! Like Chemistry/Biologie guys if they want a long term civilisation). Maybe "non war" personal thrust into a post WWIII environment. Character playing instead of gunplay.

*thinks some more* With the Reagan's nuclear power plant, it could actually turn itself INTO a refinery for jet fuel...

Sorry, still thinking about it.

Another nice one (maybe)

+ Aquire some WWII planes either to replace worn out / lost planes (And even in peace there are losses) or as templates for building them. An A1 Skyraider (basically WWII tech) or Hellcat / Bearcat will be far more useful to most T2K units and easier to maintain. And if you use them as templates, next is to aquire the craftsman

+ Going down south

Not everybody is a hero. And with the most powerful warship remaining, striking a deal with a SouthAm government (say OPEC member Venezuela) might be an interesting option. Maybe not for the leading officers, but there's always place for a Mr. Christian. Or some enemy agents. And after the mutiny suceeds, maybe there's more dirty games infiltration the government in a takeover bit

I'm still stickin' with heading for long beach and calling it home. Depends on which ocean it ends up in via the time travel but...if its pacific like the movie it would be useful for 1-2 heavy strikes versus enemies before it needs to find permanent safe harbor... also god forbid it runs into an enemy sub on the way...well perhaps it has an awac..

Long Beach...SoCal
- old battleship moorings
- narrow defendeable harbor
- oil (distributed) pumps
- naval weapons station
- various chevron facilities...
- the old McDonnell Douglas facilities
- several regional airports
- marine base
- 50 year old wwII aircraft...of various types
- plenty of power boats to convert into harbor patrol...
- food production
- manufacturing
- plenty of shipping warehouses filled with stuff
- and a valley env capable of easy air superiority
- sushi, for those addicted

It really just depends where the T2000 LA was nuked... perhaps there is some damage to some of these facilities but hey...

She probably would find San Diego useful. Its active base and would be a prime target.
