This is Free Trader Beowulf...

Well, you probably know how the rest goes.

I was just wondering, has anyone actually used this as the opening scene for their Traveller campaign?

How would it play out from the perspective of:

the Free Trader Beowulf crew

a merchant ship receiving the signal

a detached scout, plus guests, receiving the signal

a mercenary group

a corsair band

an active duty navy backstory

etc.

Used this or something close several times now.

This is free trader. . . <inaudible> . . . help for <inaudible> sake help! . . . . we are carrying medical supplies and colonists bound for <inaudible> we are under attack. Mayday, mayd <inaudible> We are <inaudible> cabin pressure we <inaudible> . . . please is there anybody out there . . . please help!

The attackers are more often than not Vargr raiders.

It has traditionally been from the point of view of active duty naval characters or scouts that arrive on the scene by accident.

From the trader's point of view the situation must be desperate. Out gunned, outmanned and alone. Nothing left to do but run up the white flag and hope for the best.

It depends, a megacorp liner might have a company policy about stuff like that. Don't get involved, pick up survivors if you are able to and report the situation to the local/Imperial authorities. An armed independent merchant might respond.

Anyone crazy enough to enlist in the scouts and lucky enough to survive to retirement would give it a shot.

I am sure merc groups would respond if they were not on their way to a better deal. They are in the area anyway and they would have their clients over a barrel. If the odds look good why not? If not then forget it.

Hate is a very strong word. I tend not to use it. But, I think there those in the gaming world who think it is the only way to go but for me there are many alternatives. The above only confirms that.

We'll see how well Serenity/Firefly does for Dark Horse, if it is successful perhaps we ought suggest a Traveller strip getting them to build on that success. Would an idea like this have to be vetted through MWM (as a courtesy, one would, of course)? Would he want to edit the scripts?

I think all Anime is now produced by a plot writing machine in Nagoya. I used to find the conventions of its style appealing, but now it seems stangnant, and a sinister/creepily sexual aspect to it. Too many green apples make eater puke.

Greetings and salutations,

A corsair would respond to the call just to see what is happening. If the attacking party is weaker, the corsairs might risk jumping them after the work is done.

Minimal risk and the possibility of profitable bouty. Oh yeah! Let's go save that cargo.

Nice colouring in that artwork and it definately captures the feel of the show (except for the little girl with the absurdly oversized WH40K gun) But the drawing is a little ropey and the likenesses of the principle cast are very hit and miss. :(

Manga/Anime like most things, has it's strengths (namely hardware) and it's weaknesses (namely it's freakish big-eyed characters and it's often non-sensical Japanese sense of humour) but I'd be the first to agree that it would be inappropriate for Traveller.

Paul Drye and I mooted an idea for a free online Traveller comic a while back. He had some nice ideas but - as usual - my notorious attention span (or lack thereof) brought the project to a grinding halt. :(

Well, courtesy aside, as a matter of legality you have to...its his intellectual property, so courtesy isn't really the issue. As to editing the scripts? who knows - but certainly have oversight, I would expect.

However, I wouldnt hold out much hope. Realistically, Traveller is at best a niche market...you'd probably have to prove first there's the demand for it.Outside of gaming, most folks have never heard of traveller, whereas firefly has the juggernaut of TV exposure to support it.
