TNS Breaking News Participation

I recently posted a TNS Breaking News article about Spinward Pirates. This article was based on a real life article about Somali pirates. I'm going to keep an eye on the news and see if I can convert some stories over to Traveller that people can use in their game.

If anyone else wants to do this too, please feel free to post more News Entries.

Just be sure to completely file all the serial numbers off. Remember, no real world politics, religion, etc. And don't turn these into thinly disguised commentaries on real world events.

That said, using the news for inspiration is great and I look forward to the Travellerized version :)

SP,

Great idea and, keeping Dan's wise suggestions firmly in mind, we should have a lot of fun with this thread.

Mine's already posted.

Makes a great deal of sense too. Rather than grouse about SJGames' increasingly poor TNS items, why not write scads of them ourselves?

Regards,
Bill

That'll be the tough part. I'll try to keep it to the news facts and not the opinionated commentary. Ine Givar in the Marches could be an equivalent to the Al-Queda, and I'm sure there's others that could match up. If I remember right, I read about how to do this with real news articles in a Challenge magazine.

I was hoping you'd see this and show up with your ideas.

:)

I've done something like that before for my Efate landgrab. I used the UK's CeeFax news which gives nice little capsule news stories. And rather than just one shot stories, these form an ongoing narrative.

(IMTU the TNS is like an AP newswire story, most news is not TNS. Also, whilst on most Imperial worlds the local news stories comes from a local Makhidkarun subsidiary, on Efate a local Naasirka subsidiary ... Naasirka TV ... is the main broadcaster.)

Anyway, you can see them all here (arranged in reverse chronological order with relevant TNS stories inserted).

What sort of Traveller "time window" are you looking at?

Lycanorukke,

Why not all of them?

While my two have been set in the Golden Age and the Marches, it would be much better if we had TNS items from T20, T4, GT, and all the other versions, locations, and mileaus.

Hemdian's list provides excellent examples too. Plenty of "guidelines" there.

Bill

And of course changing the dates and locations might not be too hard to do either to fit individual games :)

Just have some good clean fun with it :D

Could be, but mostly the potential trouble I see is comments on "reports".

I'll try to keep it to the news facts and not the opinionated commentary.

That's all I'm asking for. And to be absolutely clear I am NOT singling you out by any means SS. That is just a general reminder to everyone.

Bits like this though...

Ine Givar in the Marches could be an equivalent to the Al-Queda, and I'm sure there's others that could match up.

Are a good example of where the trouble starts. Don't even hint at real world correlations. Avoid it at all costs. I really don't want to have to sit on the thread and moderate it, or close it because things get out of hand, or worse still start swinging the Ban Hammer.

Again, that's a general caution, and encouragement to do it right.

EDIT: random musing p.s. - Hey! Cool. How long has that been there? Or did I see it before and forgot? Or maybe it's a moderator only tool thingy? I see this little "forward" button at the end of the user name in quoted posts that is a link to the original post. Who else sees it? Oh come on, it can't be just me :)

I'll just pop in to second Dan's warning:

Real world obvious correlations between 1950 to 2050 will get you infracted.

What sort of Traveller "time window" are you looking at?

I think Whipsnade is right. No reason to limit the time window. Most entries could probably be adjusted and the names changed for another time period if needed.

I really don't want to have to sit on the thread and moderate it...

You know you want to read them all.

EDIT: I was wondering, if this really takes off, can we sticky it?

First Time I ever noticed it, can't be a mod on;ly thing though, it works for me.

Hmmm, weather reports which vary by planetary S, A, and H...

And maybe TL. TTB lists Weather Control as TL8 (circa 1980-89) though of course that's primitive stuff. Cloud seeding leaps to mind. And some suggested ideas for hurricane/tornado/etc. busting I read about once. Higher TLs might allow finer and wider control.

This could (should?) be a thread all of it's own :)

To all who have posted news items in this thread...

This thread, and Lycanorukke's similar posts in the thread elsewhere on SJG's TNS, has given me an idea:

Just like the old print JTAS carried TNS, Freelance Traveller should carry a similar wire service (name to be determined).

To this end, I would very much appreciate it if, each month, as many of you who wish to participate would take on the rôle of a 'stringer' for the service, and provide up to five items that could be used as 'flavor', or could inspire a referee or players to adventure.

Which timeline/milieu you 'string' for is up to you, as is where in Charted Space you choose to focus.

What say you all? If you're interested, please drop me a note at editor@freelancetraveller.com

Jeff,

As with anything I post anywhere, you are welcome to use, edit, and/or ignore my TNS items in any manner you see fit.

Regards,
Bill
