Traveller 30th Anniversary CT Game

So, as mentioned in my blog (which apparently most of you aren't looking at since my reverse psychology sig telling you to stay away didn't work :smirk:) this Sunday June 22 is the 30th Anniversary of Traveller. Yep, 30 years ago that enigmatic little black box with those simple words hit the shelves.

Anyway, to celebrate I'm going to start a Play-by-Post CT OTU game in a private group.

http://www.travellerrpg.com/CotI/Discuss/groups/groups.php?g=7

It's under construction at the moment but the game will kick off this Sunday.

More details on the group page and here as I build it.

Oh, and Happy 30th Anniversary Traveller! Congratulations Marc and everyone else who's kept the olde game alive and kicking :D

I'm not sure :)

I've got it set up as private right now for a couple reasons but I don't know if that means you have to join to see or if it is viewable without seeing. If lurking won't work set up as private I'll probably post a synopsis in narrative style. Semi fan-fic multi contributor single editor type thing.

Just an fyi it is Play-by-Post so most of the time it'll be a pretty sedate pace. I'm hoping that the first bit this Sunday plays more like a chat game session if the pbp can handle it. After that it may be more of a turn style game. And I may be opening it to more casual and drop in play at that time. Presuming of course that there's interest :)

I appreciate the honesty and resolve in not jumping in when you don't have time to play at the moment Scout.

But if the cast is a little light I may take those who want to simply observe too. If that's the case for anybody else, just leave me a note here to that effect and I'll let you know.

Hi Dan

What time were you going to kick this off? I've joined as a member (since it lets you do that) but I can "unjoin" if you get some hard-core folks involved.

What's your plan for characters / system?

Scott Martin

Hi Scott, no need to unjoin it looks like there'll be room, we are only 4 yet, counting you and not Scout (who may be 5). I'd like at least 5 I think.

The plan is to start prelim (meet and greet in character, and shopping) as characters are approved (tomorrow through Saturday) at everyone's leisure.

Then the thing takes off in earnest (the adventure begins) Sunday morning when I get free, figure 11am CST and will run with breaks as long as I can and there are enough players active.

After that it'll be more like the usual pbp where things happen slow and steady if there's still interest.

Characters will be pretty much standard CT Book 2 humans and mostly OTU setting starting off at Regina.

That's the draft plan anywho. Just finishing up the outline to send out now. Have you down for a copy, and Scout too to keep him up to speed in case he comes tag-along.

OK, first batch of invitations are out. Five (potentially)* filled spots and five more open.

I included Spinward Scout as a tag-along. No pressure on you to play Scout but if you gen characters they'll be there for when you are ready.

Still a few slots open and time to work out characters today. After today time gets tight for getting in on the beginning.

F-T, can I join? I am VERY interested in playing!

I would prefer to be a Marine, but if we need flight crew, I am good with Navy or Scout too.

Certainly pendragonman, more fodder for the... er, I mean, Welcome Aboard :D

Click the link to the Free Trader Beowulf in my sig, hit the Join Group there and look for your introductory instruction package (now with 6% less errata!) by PM shortly.

As for crew assignments, who said you get a ship :smirk:

Whatever you'd like to play should be doable within the guidelines. It's only if you want to go off script that you might be less capable, but some want the fun of being different which is cool too. We'll find something for everyone to do, even if it's just modeling the latest in red upper body wear

Just kidding about the red shirts, they aren't in style at the moment.

Wow! Six percent less errata! Woot!

OK, I am with the "IN" group now. Send the packet when you can!

Does anyone know if this is on track to start (with intros) today, or is it on hold until tomorrow (or later)? I know that Dan had some Real World permits happen late last week which he needed to deal with, but I hadn't heard whether he had been forced to postpone / reschedule...

Scott Martin

Hey Scott et al, I'm working on it at the moment. Stayed up late last night trying to get all prepped for it today but just ended up tired and stiff without finishing :toast:

It looks like it'll be tomorrow morning local before I kick it off, but it will be no later than that. It may be tonight but I don't expect so, it's only midafternoon and I'm feeling bagged and still have some yard work to do (or dodge ;) )

Your first notice that the game has begun will be either an email or a PM that you are approved. Or both.

I have what I need from you Scott, flykiller, Fritz, and pendragonman.

But, there's still three that I don't have a character(s) or email addys for:

Border Reiver is away for a bit but will probably be there in the morning.

Burocrate had a question I missed after shutting down early this AM so I expect once he sees the answer he'll be along with his.

Ganidirsii O'Flynn and I talked a couple times but nothing has arrived yet. If you see this (or the PM), are you still working it out or did the email go missing? PM me please.

In case anyone hasn't had time to do a character, and wants to play a marine: UPP and Skills not included (Dan has the character in its entirety). If anyone else wants to steal the write-up for their own CT game, please feel free to let me know and I'll provide the rest of the details.

Name: Captain Julius Edward Altwies EMC (Emperors Marine Corps), Retired
Age: 35 / 36 (a total of roughly 1 year spent on various frozen watch assignments)
UPP - XXXXXX
Gender - Male
Build - Ectomorphic (Slender) (ht 190 cm Weight 68 kg)

Julius (Jules or Ed to his friends) is tall and willowy, to the point that he is ocassionally mistaken for a (female) model, with slender, graceful features, pianist's hands and the haunted look about his eyes of a veteran who has seen too much action. His close cropped alburn hair and careful gait often result in him being mistaken for a spacer, reflecting the fact that Julius has spent a considerable part of his service life in space, traveling to or from one point of "interest" to another.

Julius is a veteran of the (now disbanded) 647th marine corps, infamous for the massacre on Turin (or insert the name of a system conveniently far away from the game area) and while it is a point of record that there were three companies of the "red regiment" on detached duties while these atrocities were taking place (including "Hotel" company on the cruiser "Illustrious", commanded by Julius) the entire regiment was painted with the same brush of zealotry, and the colours were disbanded in disgrace, never to serve the empire again. The remaining officers and men of the regiment quickly found that if they were not creatively cashiered, their careers were either ended or favored with any number of extremely hazardous "volunteer only" duties. After serving a final tour with the 1189th heavy lift regiment, and being "accidentally" left in a hot extraction zone with two other former members of the 647th, Julius chose to leave the service on a medical discharge rather than cause the deaths of any more men under his command as the EMC completes its houscleaning. While Julius is bitter at the corps for his treatment and the treatment of the other members of the regiment, he swore an oath to protect the emperor, and in his opinion seeking redress against the Corps would result in more damage to the emperor than quietly resigning and looking for other opportunities.

Other "opportunities" keep presenting themselves to Julius, since the 647th was an elite rapid response and security force, and any number of questionable employers are eager to employ staff of this competence (and many would prefer that their employees have an axe to grind against the current political establishment) especially those with both security training as well as "drop wings".

Burocrate here...

Greetings,
I'm thinking of submitting a mis-matched pair for this game; proabably one ex-Navy (Bridge crew) and one ex-Other (lucky to scare-up a Working Passage).

Very excited...

I've got either a Noble or an Ex-Marine (T4 chargen though) that I'd like to play; however, I have to work (that's right, I got a job) and don't generally have computer time during the work week.

For those of you "waiting in the starport lounge" after your last assignment...
__________
A short, hunched troglodyte of a man who seems to be almost as wide as he is tall makes his way through the crowd like a portly icebreaker, barely avoiding collisions with several patrons. His unkempt sandy hair partially obscures a pair of antiquated reading glasses, which are perched slightly askew on his stubby nose. His clothes are either the latest Avant Garde fasion from coreward, or at least 80 years out of fashion: a muted (although very well cut) suit "accented" by a painfully bright acid green scarf in lieu of a tie.

He makes his way over to a table with a scowling woman wearing a neat, but slightly large, ship suit - missing a patch or two, where the lines name might have once been. He spends a few seconds talking to her, and she looks like she is trying to decide whether to finish drinking her "something blue" or to improve the troll's fashion statement with it.

Perhaps we should start a thread in the PbP forum or PBEM until the "group" bugs can be ironed out?
