traveller CCG

hey guys - how about a traveller collectable card game???
ideas???

I'm a simple unfrozen caveman, and fear and despise Collectable Card Games.

CCG haven't made money for several years. Thank God no-one will take him up on it.

Imagine if he had thought of it in 1994. <<shudder>>

Oh (influential comsic force to be named later) NO! The money I have spent on 'those' cards could have paid off the mortgage on the Empress a few years early, and the time, what I might have done with all that time.

Oh, I still play on occasion, after all I have several thousand cards over, um, 3(?) games. I have always blamed the dark years of RPG on the CCG rise. I don't know where you get the idea they aren't making money anymore, it still seems to be doing ok from what I can tell. Oh sure there aren't any instant bazillionaires these days (and hopefully the craze is past) but I think a good, new (perhaps RPG) CCG could make money. It would need a fresh new hook though.

That said, sucker and softy that I am for this game I'd probably spend every cred in my far-trader's maintenance account for a Traveller CCG, and damn (can I say that here?) the banks, if it was a GOOD Traveller CCG I'd probably fill my cargo hold with it and skip, keeping the best cards for myself and selling the rest for food and fuel.

I refuse to even consider CCG's and any member of my crew caught with them in thier posession is immediatly spaced. After we kick his ass.

Equipment cards would not be a bad idea. I'm not exactly sure how it'd work. I don't think it'd be cost effective for them to print a whole card for each item in each individual version. (4-10 different SMG, ditto for Auto pistol, revolver, and all that). Maybe one card with all the listed "official" smg's, or acr's? Then you've gotta go find one for individual equipment. I don't see this as something printed out, but It may be cost effective to make a .pdf of this and sell copies of the .pdf, maybe as a travellers aid. The buyer of the .pdf could then print the sheets (cards) he wants, rather than spending a trillion dollars getting 1 card per pack he can actually use. Hell, this is such a good idea I may even start working on some of these for myself.

Back in the days when Avery was actually posting here (on the T^5 forum) he had cards of various types for Traveller: character cards, vehicle cards, equipment cards, alien race cards, life pursuit cards, etc. Although these were just blank templates (i.e. playing-card-sized versions of the sorts of forms & charts in Supp12), it would've been a small step to pre-print the info, slap on some artwork, and sell them separately, and I wouldn't be surprised if this notion occurred to him at least once or twice.

All you need is a few images of the item, place that in the background behind the text, and put whatever stats and stuff you want on it. I'd put in the weapon, it's characteristics, ammo types, and room for the owner to mark ammo off. Probably include a spot for damage to the weapon itself cause I as a GM will screw some poor pinky out of a weapon in a firefight if he don't take care of it in a heartbeat. (It's that army training in me)

Not necessarily collectible, but there is a pretty good chance you will be seeing some Traveller related card games released in the next year. This was one of the discussions we had with Marc during GenCon.

*Disclaimer* The Vargr neither condone nor support the creation of a Traveller CCG.
Any pinky caught with it will be zapped by our superduperplanetkiller that we will creativly call a "Death Star."

In all seriousness though, I hope it works out for you guys and ya'll make some moolah, but I'm not touching it. Sorry.

It's cool. :D

This is a project Marc proposed and wants to work on. What we have discussed is more along the lines of some beer and pretzels type stuff. Games with a Traveller flavor and background, but fairly quick and easy to play.

I play ChronX (online CCG) quite a lot and the effort those guys go to to create a backstory I think Traveller could leapfrog it with ease.

The TORG game blended cards and RPG very nicely, it made combat very tasty indeed. I wouldn't mind seeing that stolen and used in Traveller. In TORG it was structured to assist the pulp flavour of the game and it worked... don't know how people would take to pulp drama in their Traveller games though so it would need to have a few alternatives for people to choose from.

And I still use the Whimsy cards that were brought out for early Ars Magica. They are great fun. There's something extra in it for the players when they can possess and play a card to introduce a plot element or steer and existig one for a bit.

I like the idea of pick up & play Traveller related games though. For Christmas last year my folks got me a wooden(!) 3D Noughts and Crosses game on the basis that 'it looked a bit like those games on the Sci-Fi shows'. I play it a bit, but it's not exactly chess. However, if it was Traveller themed, I'd have it sitting on my desk at work and I'd be using it as a prop in all my table-top games.

There used to be lots of little pick up & play card games like Groo, Cults, Once Upon a Time etc so I'm sure there are 50 or so good ideas for Traveller mini games.

A good few years ago me and a friend started modding Half Life so we could play out the Dulinor assassination and escape from the Palace... it's not pick up and play, I know, but damn I want to make a few Traveller video games. I've worked on enough dross for the mass market...

I simply don't know how to respond to that.

IIRC both Traveller:2300 and Shatterzone had card deck mechanics. Neither caught on.

The CCG concept interets me not...

however...

Generic cards one could fill out for each item?
Creature Cards? Pic on the front. Game stats on back? (THIS leaps out at you.)

One game I played (Albedo) used chits and envelopes to represent gear and storage. if you had your back pack then you could pull any gear chit out of the 'backpack' envelope. I thought it very efficient.

Anyhow. I think some sort of card system giving GM's and players. item world or creature specific data on some sort of cheat sheet card. would be VERY cool.

Err, where were the cards in Traveller:2300 then? Don't see them in my copy, or 2300AD.

Whilst the bubble has definetly burst for TCG's, don't discount them yet. I believe that P*kem*n and its ilk still dwarf D&D on WotC financial reports to Hasbro, so there may be some comercial mileage.

And a Traveller flavoured version of B&P games like the Great Dalmuti would be fun (and with a bunch of Traveller players could be played with the existing game actually...). One could also do something tongue in cheek and fast paced based around each player as one of the major alien races (upto six players, but can work with fewer)...

Hmm. I await further news with interest...

Well, there were no cards in it, but IIRC there was a system for generating NPC motivations and personalities (or something) using ordinary playing cards. I guess that's what Uncle Bob meant.
