Traveller Hero Launches!

I agree 100% A good friend of mine is a power gamer
Something I can't control

When I was trying to run GT a few years ago he took Mute to max out his disadvantages

Personally I think the rules sets are a little more flexible for PC generation something I enjoy. You can custom create your PC, but I agree the PC's can't do everything well with a point buy

And, now, yet an eighth version of Traveller rules?

Can this be good for Traveller?

Or, is it good idea to have so many incarnations?
There's another thread about player base fragmentation here on COTI. But, allow me to generalize hastily, and say that these versions are all grouped according to audience:

CT is for grognards and minimalists. MT is for CTers who want more detail. Some of the abortive T4 (like the psionics rules) may fit in this arena.

TNE is for GDW house system grognards and gearheads. Some of the abortive T4 (FFS2) may fit in this arena.

T20, GT, and THERO are primarily for people who like D20, GURPS, and HERO.

Please note that Marc Miller has been working with the HERO folks to go through whatever is needed to OK their license. So not only does Marc think that another version is fine, but that it and T5 will fit their own niches, at least.

...and since Supp4 make a reference to it, I'll SWAG and say that T5's intended niche is the original base -- CT and MT players -- with room for supplemental gearheadedness like FFS2r (revised).

I would tend to disagree that Traveller doesn't have any balance. Even in CT there are several skill sets that are only available by enlisting in specific professions.
On the other hand...

You and your GM roll up a new character. He allows you one roll for each of your stats. And, you end up rolling a 2 for your STR. But, you turn right around and roll a 12 for your DEX.

That "2" STR will guide your character generation because you'll want to try to up-it during chargen--at the expense of skills. So, your table your rolling on is predetermined...and there's no guarrantee that you'll ever up your STR. You've got to roll it.

This would never happen in a point system.

In addition, there's a real "thrill" with rolling high during chargen. Actually rolling them bones for a high total means something. You've had a lucky die roll, and it will give you an edge over other Traveller characters.

If you get real lucky and roll high for a few stats, then you've created a monster CT character.

That kind of feeling is priceless. It can really marry a player to his character.

And, it can't be duplicated with a points system.
