Traveller-like computer games?

Well, what can I say, I'm a lover not a fighter.

I commend your piloting skills. How in blazes did you manage to win missions like saving the president's ship from Indie attack? I had my hands full just trying to stay alive after the Indie fleet jumps in, let alone protect another ship. Dodging gazillion missiles and PBC shots sort of took all my time - and time was a luxury that mission did not have. IIRC, that was the mission that turned me to the dark side and I started using cheats.

BTW, did you ever play Warhead? It was an old Amiga space sim from the same guy who was behind Independence War, Glyn Williams. An excellent game, very much like I-War (story driven, vector flight, etc.) and also very difficult (but that one I completed without cheating!). It was the spiritual father of I-War. It had a marvellous soundtrack, making full use of Amiga's high quality (for it's time) stereo sound and one of the most memorable space sim scenes - first contact with a Berserker (try offering a hand of friendship to an Ancients' Warmachine). That game alone was enough reason to have an Amiga...

In fact, Warhead was a big push towards hard(er) sci-fi in RPGs for me. Before that, I never gave much thought to how space flight might work or how space warfare would be. Star Wars was the way I'd been following until then, even in Traveller. Traveller's "hard space opera" approach had always intrigued me, but I mostly ran Star Wars-styled sci-fi campaigns then. Scientific realities were largely victims of technobabble (or ignorance). Nothing wrong with that, per se, space opera isn't that much about science after all (IMHO). But this had started to gnaw the suspension of disbelief in my imagination. Warhead opened my eyes to the possibilities of hard sci-fi. Hard SF was no longer a dull or stifling part of sci-fi, it was a road of possibilites. Truth is stronger than fiction. Amen. :D

Anyone who wants tri-orthographic views, turn based combat, an ACQ/snapshot/AHL like feel, and a chance to tangle with mindbenders, I can only recommend UFO , UFO:Terror from the Deep, UFO:Apocalypse, etc. The first one is still my favourite. Nothing like carefully preparing the squad, having Bob run out of time while priming a grenade in the middle, and then an enemy pop out and shoot him before he gets another activation.... drop grenade... BOOM!

Great fun.

And of course, if you want the feel of TL-7 merc teams, I love Ghost Recon, GR:Desert Siege, and want to get GR:Island Thunder. Lots of good mods out there for these too.

Now, these aren't Travelleresque - hey, they're not even sci fi - but Spiderweb Software makes some neat-o (heh heh heh :D ) fantasy games. I recommend the "Avernum" series, the first "Geneforge," and "Nethergate" in no order whatsoever.

I know this is just a topic dig up, but I think Freelancer is the closest I've ever been to playing a Traveller PC game (other than MegaTraveller 1 & 2, of course). I hope that someone would make a Traveller conversion of the game, or even better a Traveller game based on the same game engine! :D

For a merc game, the best I know is Jagged Alliance 2, not sci fi, but it has all the merc freedom (buying weapons, armor, ammo, and hiring more mercs). For a sci-fi First Person Shooter game, maybe Elite Force is closer to Traveller than say, Aliens vs Predator or Quake...

Not set as a Traveller Game, but I like StarFlight for SEGA. I heard that it was a computer game too, just never seen a copy for PC.

Have you guys NOT played Freelancer???
I bought it at Target for $20, and spent most of last month finishing the first plot line....Very good...Very Travelleresque.
I recommend highly

Taipan(I play it as "Far East Trader" because of a copyright dodge). An old computer game that has the player as amerchant in the Indian Ocean in the 1800's. Somewhat like "Far-trader".

Mr. Chase:

Starflight and Starflight II are still pretty cool little games and very Traveller-esque, down to building your crew, trading, adventuring on planets, and upgrading your ship.

There is even an attempt to build a Starflight III to continue the original storylines. Here's the link:

Starflight III

There's also links at this site to download the original games. Don't know if they work on modern machines or not.

Actually I saw them on the web. Abandonware. Available for download, free. Now I have to remember where I saw them.

I remember seeing two Traveller computer games for sale in late 1992 or early 1993. Anybody know anything about them? Wish I'd picked them up. (Come to think of it, I think they were MegaTraveller.)

Also, anyone know if the Trader software program is available anywhere?

There was this game, "Darkseed," which came out about a decade ago. (I downloaded it, but it wouldn't go past the first screen.) So, does anyone know anything about it?
