Traveller meets Tolkien

I remember reading the entries for Traveller in my old Thieves World boxed set, and thinking that the idea of a fantasy world in a sci-fi setting was fairly unique amongst roleplaying games... almost twenty years after the box set had been published.

The way that Classic Traveller classifies technology levels (along with providing stats for everything from swords to blasters), I don't see why it couldn't be used as a fantasy system in the vein of D&D (it, would, of course be a great deal more lethal).

Has anybody used Classic Traveller in this capacity? Have you ever played a fantasy game using Traveller rules, or dropped overtly fantasy worlds into your Traveller universe?

I have not quite used fantasy but a rugged wilderness type adventure that had lots of fantasy creatures in it and used "High Tech as Magic" & sophisicated psionics to explain some of the more magical aspects of the inhabitants when their Starship crashed on a world well off the trading routes.

CT items, I have transported into AD&D worlds that I have run, without too much difficulty because of the inheritant limitations of CT tech (pre-Mercenary).

I'm thinking about doing the opposite, but it's good to know that this works, as well (if it flows well in one direction, it shouldn't be too difficult to reverse it). Thanks for the info!

I once started a group as CT barbarians - they had enemies such as wizards (psionics), various beast men types (feral Vargr and Aslan), demons (droyne plus their toys), and the big bad was an AI which controlled various automatons.

They eventually got off planet, only to be promptly arrested by the Imperial Navy interdiction squadron.

They were then tranported to an Imperial Research Station, which was where it ended...

There was a Dragon Magizine piece around 1981 or so that gave CT tables for dwarf player characters. I used it as a basis to add elves as well.

There are already CT rules for Elves... they're just called Darrians....

Other "elves" could be Fading Suns - Obun & Ukar which I think you can now get as D20 product called Aliens & Devilry which includes a sourcebook called The Dark Between the Stars...speaking of supernatural inspiration into a scientific universe check out these products...and let your imagination flow.

FS D20 was poorly written, but with reference to the non-D20 version, the races could easily appear in T20.

I thought this from day 1. ;) In the beginning of my SciFi-carreer I was like: "Phew, thanks God, there are no Elves and Dwarves in Traveller." Then I stumbled across Darrians. :D

I like'em!

Andy Fralix (I think) has had talk on here somewhere of building a monstrous ringworld populated with fantasy characters. Talk to him.

Alien Modules 1-7 were some of my treasured childhood possessions. When I fell back into Traveller I was startled to find that AM8 existed. Alas, then I read it. Really, how important was it to incorporate The Silmarillion into Traveller?
