[Traveller Renaissance] Update your Traveller webpage

You need "webspace", i.e. hard disk space provided by a "web hoster". Some cost money, some are free of charge - due to being part of the service your ISP provides, your e-mail provider offers, or due being financed by advertisement. Currently I have some space to spare and could offer you a subdomain, if you wish, to just test it out or use it for your Traveller web page, e.g. http://carlobrand.heldenhaufen.de/ - I would guide you in using it.

Or Carlobrand, there are web hosting companies that provide free online web design tools too. I use weebly.com, you register, get a website, and its yours to fill, write on, put pictures on, sort, add new pages, etc. very versatile and you can have a website to look at in a few hours!

That is very generous of you. Yes, I would very much like to try that. How do I get started?

I may explore that too. My 14 year old is an aspiring cartoonist and has been asking about a site for himself.

I used to volunteer at (host going away).

21 pixel text banner, unlimited. There are people there with over 10 gigabytes of material. No domains yet, just sub-domains. The owner is working on various projects, including new servers, to implement domanis.

The banner is added when the server displays a web page, not added to the files that you edit and upload.

edited out my old site there.

Oh, the php is limited, due to various issues with bad people. Nucleuscms works easily, but Word Press and Textpattern have to be altered.

I'm going to rewrite my draft intro page from a player's perspective.

It will start with quick-rolling up a sample character.

Then it will give him a suit of armor and a laser pistol.

Then it will run him through a round of combat.

Next, he'll get to ride on a starship.

Finally, he'll meet other sophonts.

Library Data will remain as-is. But the other sections will be gutted.

I'm revising the framework first. Once I'll post that, then I'll refine the text further for more punch.

What Framework are you using? (Apache, Perl?) For responsive design and easy CSS management you may want to look at Foundation with SASS (http://foundation.zurb.com/).
(I wrote a Getting Started for it, but that's in German - anyway, if you wanna try your luck with Google translator, drop me a line.)

@robject: Please excuse me for suggesting a framework for you to use, I never intended to degrade your efforts or the way you are doing things.

@all: I apologize to you for derailing this thread and will try to stay on-topic from now on.

Oh thalasso, no offense taken. I appreciate your suggestions! And, derail away, this is an internet forum after all!

Speaking of dusting off sites.... I'm working on giving TravellerMap.com an overhaul to modernize the appearance and improve discoverability and usability. Preview:

http://travellermap.com/new.html

It should be tablet and smartphone friendly, so please give those a try as well. It's far more forgiving now, both in terms of technology and having room to plug more features in without overwhelming the user, so tweaks and additions can be done more rapidly. As always, feedback appreciated.

...

I agree with the sentiments of this thread that we need a one-shot home page for Traveller. http://eaglestone.pocketempires.com/Traveller/ is pretty darn close, and I like the text robject quoted from The Traveller Book (I stole the idea). It'd be nifty if we could make travellerrpg.com a gentle intro that's good for n00bs as well as a portal for grognards.
