Traveller w/ D20 Modern

Recently one of my fiancee's game group members gave us a copy of D20 Modern, Future and Future Tech. So I got to thinking ... these seem a bit simpler to use than d20 Traveller - so how would converting/combining Traveller 20 and D20 Future/Modern work? Especially if one wanted to go more towards D20 Modern, if only to reduce the number of options that might drive some players away? Yes, I know this would be basically fan work but it seems like an idea...

So three starting points:

1.) Vacsuits, especially TL 10+ ones, could fall into Light Armor proficiency, and would be equivalent to Mesh - mesh is light armor, and cloth is medium, with combat armor being heavy and Battledress being Powered Armor Prof.; also, there would be civilian gauss pistols and rifles, which would fall under personal firearms proficiency, as would laser pistols and carbines.

2.) Collapse the Traveller tech scale somewhat, to have something similar to the GURPS 3E version.

3.) How would we modify the Traveller careers to make use of the D20 modern classes (fast hero, tough hero etc.)?

I think it's do-able. If you've got T20 on hand that'll certainly be a good guide to use as a basis for Traveller-izing d20 Modern, while taking advantage of the simplifications you're looking to get from d20 Modern.

The alignment of the hero type could cuts crossgrain to the Traveller occupations to my mind. The specific occupation would be more in line of background, and perhaps a basis for selecting some of their skills and feats. It'd be easier to say which occupations don't fit a class than to say specifically which do. At any rate, d20 modern still has occupations, and these map more closely to the Traveller occupations than the classes do.

You really don't NEED to modify classes nor careers - the T20 system really doesn't require that the class and career line up. (Hunter left the linkage mostly to enforce the skills.)

So, just look at the normal class' skill list, and require at least half the SP be spent on its skill list, and you'll be fine.

Someone started years ago to make a small conversion on the boards. Use the search feature to find what work was one.

The downside is that none of the ships were done. Expect the Scout stats which are in the old pdf from Quik Link
