Turret installation

Assuming that there is a hardpoint and space dedicated to firecontrol, it should just be the case of cutting a hole, dropping the installation in and pluging it in. I would think, if the parts are on hand it would take less than a week. For a swap out, for example replacing the Dual Turret on a Scout with a Triple Turret, a couple of hours, less than a day. To install weapons in an empty turret? About the same a few hours. This does assume that the systems that you want are on hand and the place you are having the work done do this on a fairly regular basis.

Now if you don't have a ton set aside for firecontrol. Or if, in your traveller universe, power feeds aren't pre-run to the space dedicated to firecontrol, then it would take a bit longer.

However, please note this is strictly my opinion and how I do it IMTU. I have yet to find a canon reference to it.

Yep, for what it's worth my take on it is pretty much the same. Only difference is when you designate a hardpoint in a design it certainly includes pre-wiring so it's just plug and play, and no cutting the hull either. Just a removable panel to uncover the mounting then drop the turret in with the fire control station like a plug in a socket.

Of course if you're talking adding a weapon to a design that didn't include a hardpoint you get into very non-canon areas for CT.

Can you point to where it says that a ton must be set aside per turrent for fire control in HG2? It's in Book 2, but AFAIK, not in Book 5. I just re-read HG2 p.29, 30, and 31, and didn't locate anything about it.

Particularly telling are phrases:
CT: Book 5: High Guard p.30
Turrets require only that a hardpoint be designated and created during construction. [. . .] Hardpoints are designated at no cost.
Fire control isn't mentioned. (Unless I missed it . . .).

How about if you use Solomani style fixed mounts with no tonnage for the weapons required?

This saves a bunch of space on 10 ton fighters.

Good points RainOfSteel. I think HG traded the fire control tonnage for turret tonnage to allow larger (read military) weapons. That's how I always saw it. So book 2 designs were limited to the 1 ton turrets while book 5 designs could have the heavier turrets.

Breaking it down:

Book 2 charges for the hardpoint, turret and weapon(s), but the turret itself is not factored for size, just the 1 ton for the fire control, which presumably is part (or whole) of/with the turret. I always figured it was 1/2 ton fire computer and 1/2 ton gunner couch and access.

Book 5 (1st ed.) charges for just the turret and weapon(s) and while it describes the turret as "extend(ing) beyond the hull" they also require "1 ton of interior space allocated to it." This edition adds fusion and plasma weapons to the mix for turrets, but only as single or double mounts, and needing only the same 1 ton of interior space.

Book 5 (2nd ed.) seems to only charge for the weapon (no turret costs listed) and describes the turret as "emplaced on the hull" and requiring space as listed by the weapon type. So now the plasma and fusion are still limited to single or double mounts but those turrets are now 2 tons each. You also get the single mount 3 ton particle accelerator turret.

Clear as mud right ;)

OH NO! Now you've done it. I had not forgotten the Soli's fixed mounts but it does add a further complication to the mix. It's not book 2 (but closest to it) or book 5. It was a little sidebar in the Alien Module 6: Solomani...

"Fixed weapons mounts allow up to two weapons to be attached per each hardpoint on the ship and do not require fire control tonnage or a turret. Weapons in fixed weapons mounts are operated by a gunner on the bridge and are subject to an attacker's DM of -2 in space combat. A ship is allowed fixed weapons mounts equal to the model number of the computer installed on the ship (Modle/2 computer allows two hardpoints to have fixed weapons mounts)."

Oh! HG1! No wonder. I've never even seen a copy of HG1.
