Type Y - The Yacht

Mithras

SOC-14 1K
Possibly the ugliest ship in the Traveller fleet ... yet it is aimed at nobles, corpoorate execs and wealthy heiresses. Maybe one of the Keith brothers' poorer drawings???

If I'm buying a space yacht, well, it's going to look like the Princess Amidala's Nubian in The Phantom Menace, or that lovely flying wing in one of the later movies.

I may be inspired to try a design and floorplan...

Yeah - it reminds me more of a big gaudy fishing boat. :oo:

But, the Nubian reminds me more of a high altitude stealth reconnaissance plane... ;)

My take looks more like a racing yacht... :D

This is one class of ship that definitely calls for an individual design. I would think that there is literally no two alike. How would it look for some rich person to have something made on an assembly line that was just like everyone else's? That's for the pseudo-rich.....

I agree! *Real* yachts should be hand made originals. However, for the people who aren't quite that rich, there are "standardized" yachts. Just like the real world. You can buy a yacht, and have it customized how you like it. That might be an interesting business for Traveller: Ship Customizers.

But I do feel that there should be several different ship designs for the basic type Y as many different shipyards would compete for nobles business.

And for the *really* rich, there might be small custom shipbuilders that might make only a couple of ships a year, but they would each be individuals.

Since in many cases it seems (to me) that Nobles are the "executive class" in the 3I, I imagine that Type Y's are more like "company cars" or maybe limousines than real statements of personal power and wealth. Each company (or noble house) would of course decorate the interior and exterior to their specifications, but the Type Y is little more than a way to travel in some style.

The TRULY rich nobility would have larger, higher performance ships, possibly in the 1k dTon range, which could make J-3 or better.

my yachts tend to be type 6 "flattened sphere" hulls, turned on their side vertical. Then I "shape" it so one end is flat vertical (the rear) with the other end sloping (the front). The top is narrower than the bottom, which is sometimes made even "fatter" by adding fittings for 1 or 2 30-ton modules (to allow for customization). I add a few airfoils and winglets, with turrets being on the outside tips of the major winglets and additional ones (for larger yachts) being on top of the bridge or along the front edge. vehicles enter from ports on the rear side.

Makes for a "Galleon" type look, and very defensible on strange worlds....and the upper winglets make great sunning decks while on planet (3-4 stories up!)

The Type Y Yacht that we have a picture of is just one class of Type Y Yachts. If a ship class is 200T, unstreamlined, with J1, 1G, and enough fuel to make two successive jumps, and carries a ship's boat, then it is a Type Y. (Strictly speaking it may be argued that it also need to have a Model/1 computer, 14 staterooms, only one hardpoint, and carry an ATV and an air/raft, but I think a case could be made for anything that conforms to the traits that can't be altered without a major refit belonging to the same type. So as far as I'm concerned, a couple of staterooms more or less or even a Model/2 computer won't change it enough to make it a different type).

That said, I don't think a sufficiently rich noble would be satisfied with a Type Y Yacht. I'd want at least J3, and IMTU the dukes and the rich counts have J6 ships with room enough to throw a proper party.

So he can throw really big balls... :smirk:

Far-Trader gleefully splashes Happy Red Moderator ink all over the post...

TSK TSK BB242, really, you should stamp such as NSFW (though anyone surfing the web at work is either already in trouble or has a cool enough workplace to not worry ;) )

Just a classic AC/DC tune ;)

...ok, could maybe have a nsfw (not safe for work) just for the lyrics being taken... er, not literally ;) and being it is sound. Shame BB242 for not warning :(

Yes I wondered about the poor performance, AND the unstreamlined nature.

You want people to SEE it! My yacht would be very different, but it would be a challenge to come close to the TYpe Y cheap price tag.

The type Y should *not* be inexpensive. And it should be streamlined so it can *really* crash a party. :)

Maybe many yacht owners only care that people who consider a jaunt up to the highport a nice distraction for the day see it.

The Type Y IS the inexpensive yacht (Relatively speaking, of course). That's why it uses a less expensive unstreamlined hull instead of a more expensive streamlined hull, let alone a really gorgeous hull. For the discerning noble's yacht you need the Type YY or the Type Y3 or Y4 or Y5 or Y6.

Hi

A year or two ago, I started trying to put together a sketch for a Type Y, and as such I began trying to figure out some logic for the design.

After seeing a show on TV about modern yachts, it seemed to me that for some of them, the ship is less about getting somewhere and more about spending time sightseeing (and being seen) while there.

As such, eventually my thinking was maybe a Yacht in Traveller might not be streamlined is that it has traded a sleek aerodynamic shape for a hullform with large view ports and such, so the owner can cruise around in system sightseeing various planets, satellites, asteroid belts, oort clouds, and/or planetary ice belts etc while holding parties or entertaining guests onboard.

Just some thoughts.

Pat

Nice idea...
But having been to Naples and Capri, I've seen those massive yachts parked up, Europe's ultra-elite showing off. Crowds of people promenading past them. I saw one unique design, in the Bay of Naples, looking like a white submarine. Eye-catching!

I've never used the type Y, BUT I have used the type K safari ship as a yacht instead.

1) aerodynamic
2) looks great
3) onboard suite
4) jump 2
5) air/raft & launch for excursions
6) deckplan includes porch and large observation windows
7) capture tanks become reconfiguable space...

From a visual point of view, I think Yachts should have solar sails. It's literal, I know but it gives the ship a feeling of lazy, leisurely speed. Plenty of big viewports so that the idle rich can party away under the glorious vistas of heaven. These things should only move at any kind of real speed when they jump to their next party destination.

As far as the look of the thing, well, just google 'concept yacht' - those things look like space ships already :D

I took the Yacht in a different direction. Baron Devin Parker (former Navy Intelligence) inherited a stock type Y, gave it a complete overhaul [type A to type B drives], computer upgrade[ model/1 to model/3] and put in weaponry and troop berths for his House Guard. Now he has a special missions ship that still looks on the outside like a pleasure cruiser. The ship's boat is outfitted as a combat lander. Let it look bland and unremarkable - to quote another source, "she may not look like much, . . . but she's got it where it counts."

Cheers,

Bob W.

Adv 4 has one of the Leviathans being fitted out as a Yacht/Personal Command Cruiser for a Duke (no name or area identified). Owner - Imperial Household
