Ultratech ships

SOC-14 1K
The ancients ship thread got me to thinking . . .
I have FF&S (TNE) but I really don’t get how it is supposed to work.
I really wanted to make a smallish (I dunno…200-400 tons) TL-20 ship with anti-matter and disintegrator rays and a globe generator and a neat soft drink bar.

Where do I start? Keep in mind you have a LBB2 man here.

Now I'm going to lie awake all night wondering what a TL 20 cup-holder looks like.

Thanks for that.

It's feasable, clues from the MT design sequence. ACT looks like it may include J7 and J8 drives (controversial) as well as controlled misjumps (again possibly damaging the game balance).

FF&S can be used and hints at both ultratech and alternate tech. Much can be derived from progression of values already presented.

At TL20 I would think that the soft drinks bar will be pinched off into its own pocket universe complete with Tiki Room and Pineapple & Coconut Punch fountains.

The drink holder of course would keep the fluid at the correct temperature, always be full, stay where you put it in relation to your drinking orafice, never spill and always deliver a proper sip ammount.

FF&S is supposed to keep you awake for a week just designing a bicycle. Why not compromise and use LBB5!

By TL20 wouldn't everyone be bio-engineered to recycle their own water?

Zzzip, strreetchh, glug-glug, aah!

(apologies to half the population).

FF&S is not equipped to handle some of the weapon tech that appears above TL15, there are no rules for disintegrators for example.

I'd look at the MT ship design for inspiration.

A serious suggestion is to use the idea of Tesseracs. I think one of the Paranoid Press books way back when talked about them.

A tesserac is a hypercube in 4 dimensions that is twice as big on the inside as it is on the outside (8 times the volume). It can be bigger of course. It isn't really a pocket universe, but it might be a step in that direction.

Imagine all of your fuel at 1/8th the volume. 8 staterooms for the size of 1! Makes that 200-400 ton ship 1600-2000 tons on the inside. Only the weapons port sticks out the opening, all that massive weapon, with magazine, is inside the Tesserac.

For a really corny version of a Tesserac and a Hypercube, see the movies CUBE and CUBE 2. I think SciFi Channel shows them occasionally.

I dunno 'bout Paranoia, but tesseracts are covered in Dragon no. 27 (July 1979).

These are "holy grail" type Ancient artifacts IMTU.

The implications of that are really intense. How would we theoretically maintain the extra dimensional space inside the ship? Does this TARDIS effect need constant power? Could the human brain interpret that space in any meaningful way? What happens if there is a hull breach?

Ish...
What if the effect became “disturbed”? I see an Escher painting resulting from a minor malfunction.

TARDISes (TARDISi?) would be itneresting. But what kind of challenge do you offet the adventurers when they essentially have unlimited apartment space?

We know what a TL20 beverage dispenser looks like. Now how about a toaster oven?

I'll dig out the Dragon article tomorrow and see what that author had to say.

Have you seen Red Dwarf? The Talkie Toaster.
Talkie Toaster

Toaster: Given that God is infinite, and given that the Universe is infinite... would you like a toasted tea cake?
Toaster: Howdy doodly do. How's it going? I'm Talkie, Talkie Toaster, your chirpy breakfast companion. Talkie's the name, toasting's the game. Anyone like any toast?
Lister: Look, I don't want any toast, and he doesn't want any toast. In fact, no one around here wants any toast. Not now, not ever. No toast.
Toaster: How 'bout a muffin?
Lister: Or muffins. Or muffins. We don't like muffins around here. We want no muffins, no toast, no teacakes, no buns, baps, baguettes or bagels, no croissants, no crumpets, no pancakes, no potato cakes and no hot-cross buns and definitely no smegging flapjacks.
Toaster: Aah, so you're a waffle man.

TL20 Hypercube?
Lord preserve us!
This would (IMHO) way OVERBallance the game.
I believe the original idea of Traveller was more like the original "Star Trek" kind of future technology.

Phasers= OK
Telporters= OK
Hand held Lasers= OK
FTL Coms= OK
Fusion Energy= OK
Anti Matter Drives= OK
Warp Drive (1 Parsec 1 day @ warp 10)= OK

Nanotechnology= NOT OK
Androids= NOT OK
AI= NOT OK
Extradimentional Spaces= NOT OK

I beleive there is even a statement in T4 to the effect that technological advances should be limited in scope and direction.

Well, we do have robot construction. And the Kinunir. And Pocket Universes...

OK
LBB2 way of dealing with TL-20
Looking at my MT CD I figure that it just too involved.
Move the drive table one spot for every TL above 15

M Drive A
J Drive A
PP A (Antimatter)
Fuel stays the same.

Result: The S class courier now has Jump 5 and 5G Accl.

It is just something of an experiment. Not a ship for PC control but perhaps an encounter.

Constructing the ship out of multi-dimensional materials adds more “space” but how much per 100 tons?
