[Universe II] Updates Go Here

I tried to get the Universe 1 download working on my Windows 7 laptop, but no dice. I'm technical, but the quirks are beyond me.

Hemdian, any idea on what platform(s) you plan to support?

Traveller Universe 1 will work on Windows 7 ... in a VM. I use 'XP Mode' from Microsoft ... its free for Windows 7 Ultimate, and I think for Windows 7 Professional and Windows 7 Enterprise too.

Universe2 is being developed on Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate (with MS SQL Server as a backend). I will want it to work on Windows 7 32/64-bit Home Premium (or better) and Windows 8 32/64-bit (or better) as a minimum. If it also works on Windows Vista that would be great. But I'm probably not going to make any special effort to port it back to Windows XP. (And I doubt it will work on Windows 8 RT.)

It would not work on Win8 RT - that's a different run time that's available for both Win8 tablets and regular PCs running Win 8. But anything that runs win7 will run on win8.

Late to the party

I bought Universe years ago, and still consider it one, of, if not THE, best piece of software I have ever bought.

(I use Hero Designer more, but Universe is flat-out beautful, not to mention insanely powerful.)

I had no idea Universe II was being developed; the original web pages haven't been updated in years.

Please, please, PLEASE let us know as soon as it is available; I am dying to get a new version on my Windows 7 gaming laptop to run a campaign with.

Still waiting for UII

I did get Universe working on Win 7 Pro, using the instructions on Hemidian's support site.
I had to go through every single step listed there to get it to work but it does, perfectly.

Hey, rvolz?
How'd that Traveller Hero game work out?
I'm running that myself right now. So far ours is going well (I guess third time really is the charm.)

I'm not holding my breath, but I sure would like to see UII sometime soon.
I'll be buying that puppy as soon as it is available.

I may have to try it again, but I've got a while before I need it to work.

With my group, we work our campaigns in what we call "seasons," like a TV show. Right now I'm finishing up the second season of my Trav Hero game, which has taken about two years. They're finishing with Adventure 3, Twilight's Peak, and incidentally (because of how the timing worked out) the start of the Fifth Frontier War. Since one of the PCs is from Efate, and just sent her mother back there, it'll be quite the nail-biter!

I'll probably pick it up again in about a year. I generally conclude with the third installment; I ran a very successful Harn Hero game in three seasons over about seven years that the players still talk about.

I envy you quite a bit there. Twilight's Peak is my favorite published adventure of any system, no contest. I have run it with 3 different groups of Traveller players over the years and had a blast with it every single time.

But my current group of players is just a bit too chaotic and non-law-abiding for me to use most of the published adventures.
The last Traveller Hero game I attempted I was trying to run them through the Traveller Adventure and that failed miserably.
First because no battle plan survives contact with this group of players. You simply CAN'T expect them to stick to a script, unless you get them to agree to it ahead of time. And even then it's doubtful.
But second, because this bunch just doesn't want their characters to have to play by the rules. I had to move them to Glisten and District 268 to keep them from feeling stifled by law. (Or winding up Hunted by the Imperial Navy and every law officer in the Marches.)
Which means Twilight's Peak is out, unless I can lure them into it, which seems unlikely.

So everything I'm doing now is pretty much off-the-cuff.
I wish I could plan on a season, but this is more a matter of "play this campaign until I run out of ideas," then put it on the shelf for awhile (and let one of our other GMs run something else) until I can think up new plots.

ALERT! ALERT! We are lost in dark space and have no map to get home! Signal GK! Signal GK! This is the Free Trader Beowulf and we have no maps!

Status of BITS

The BITS site is down and I can't seem to find a place to buy Traveller Universe 1.7. What's the status of the software and where can I get it these days?

Hemdian is working on UII but it's a side-project of his. BITS used to sell the original but it has massive difficulties on anything MS XP and later. Or Vista and later, I forget.

You can scan older posts and find the specifics.
