Universe Software and Vista

Uninstalled everything. No luck. I checked the disc though and I have a nice scratch in it so I'm going to try and install it on a non-vista PC to see if that does anything.

I also never got it to work with Vista.

But it works fine on my older XP computer. XP is so much more reliable.

I wonder if its anything to do with the version of Vista. Everything I've read says the only difference between versions is what programs get pre-installed along with the core OS, and yet ...

I had success with Vista Ultimate but Kilgs was using Home Premium. What version did you try, Maladominus?

Anyone else lurking who's tried Universe on Vista want to share?

I've tried, couldn't get it to work. It's been a while, I was running SP1 beta at the time. I've gone to the "official" SP1 release in the meantime, and will be trying again some time...

I have a bunch of Vista VMs I can test - If I get some time this week, I'll give it a shot.

If you could, Jeff, that would be really handy. If my hypothesis proves to be correct I would expect Universe to work on Vista Ultimate, Vista Enterprise, and Vista Business ... but not on any of the Home editions. (Unless anyone can report now that they got it working on Vista Home Premium or something?)

Ah, Service Packs. Another dimension to be considered. Could it be that it doesn't work without the final version of SP1? I'll qualify what I said before: I have got it running on Vista Ultimate SP1 (not beta).

So, mmbutter, that was SP1-beta on which version?

I was doing some research last night and there did appear to be a difference in the Vista versions with ODBC servers. It indicated that Home wouldn't support but Ultimate would with a patch.

This may take me longer than expected. I have my vista machines up, but I seem to have misplaced my Universe CD. I opened up my box and found it empty. :(

It's around here somewhere...

Vista Ultimate w/SP1,32k, new build machine, year old now. Get this error on start up.
"Component 'TWISTE~1.OCX' not correctly registered: file missing or invalid

I have reinstalled twice, no dice.

I have installed Firebird2.1 as a backup measure too.

Hints, clues, allegations, whatever, will all be entertained if it helps.

That looks like TwistedPixel which is a third party component from Bananas Software used in Heaven&Earth ... nothing to do with Universe or InterBase. I don't know what TwistedPixel does exactly but it's something graphics related, so it's possible it's suplanted some built in functionality in Windows that Universe is trying to use (thus you see the error when running Universe).

Looking in Windows\System32 on my XP machine (I haven't installed HE on my Vista machine) it looks like there are a number of related files so maybe one of those is missing. It is even possible that you have enough of TwistedPixel installed for HE to run but still affect Universe (depending on what functionality is being used).

So, do you have HE installed? Does it work? Try uninstalling HE, does that help?

Um, no I do not have Heaven and Earth. Someone have a link to download it, or the vendor's website? BITS store is still offline.

Its a long shot but you could try from the start/run command:

regsvr32 twistedpixel.ocx/u

Although there must be something on your PC that tried to install it in the first place.

Just tried it on my 32bit Vista Home Premium, brand new HP G60-235DX Notebook.

Clean Install.
Followed the step by step. Had to redo the database and users.
pulled up Universe and the splash screen came up and there it sat.

Each operation except the import took aprx 5 mins per operation to load.
It crawled, but it worked - right up to starting the main program.

Since it looks like neither Universe or H&E will run on Vista-HP I guess I will be keeping my old XP notebook instead of putting it on eBay.

So what is the word on Vista Ultimate 32 Bit?

I might upgrade IF there is a good chance it would work but that is a $130 bet I'm not keen on making blind.

If it will only work on 64bit then I guess there is no hope either.

I sure hope Universe II is on schedule and will be both 32bit and 64bit compatible. Would be nice if it is XP compatible too since all my Traveller tools will forever be locked in to my XP machine.

I've not tried 64bit but 32bit seems to work (albeit a bit clunky).

If you can afford it Ultimate has a few extra toys that you can't get elsewhere.

You put "Universe 2" and "on schedule" in the same sentence! But more seriously: the target for Universe 2 is XP-32, Vista-32 and 7-32. I would also expect it to work on the 64 bit versions of same. It is possible it may work on Win2K but no promises.

As for schedule: I am now redundant and have relocated to Canada. I expect to have plenty of time to make major effort on Universe 2.

Bad news, followed by good news

Oh Great and Mighty Hemdian, we speak unto you of our plea for Universe Deux! Hearken, we listen for word of your Great Works...
