Using Original Data with Poster Maker

I have subsector data I would like to input into the Traveller Poster Maker and produce a map.

Is there a way of doing that? I've tried cutting and pasting the data into the field (Tab Columns: Hex, Name, UWP, Notes) but nothing gets produced.

Yes, but make sure you have a column header line. I'll post a link to my code which generates just such example data... Hang on, have to switch pages...

Here you go. Ignore the boilerplate XML nonsense and look at the data itself. Note the header line. Copy and paste that directly to poster-maker and see the magnificence of Travellermap!

I'm one step closer! Thank you!

1) Do I need to have date for all the columns? I built a Book 3 Subsector. Can the other columns be blank?

2) Will tabs work for the columns, or do they need to be spaces? (I noticed last night when looking at the sample data sectors in the Poster Maker from the OTU the columns were not separated with tabs but with spaces.)

Also, robject, did you build the World Builder? (http://eaglestone.pocketempires.com/cgi-bin/worldbuilder.pl) I used it last night for the entire subsector. It was awesome!

I set up my four columns under the full header line (the remaining columns under each header were blank.)

I aligned each time under the first four headers with spaces.

Hit the preview button... and got nothing. I think there is still something I'm missing.

I'm using the latest version of Safari. Tried Chrome. No luck with either.

When I try to generate, I get a Sector full of Hexes on black, but no systems or information.

This is what I'm pasting in (note that all the columns line up in the Poster Maker window):

What I did for my first attempt was take the travellermap data for an existing sub sector and then manually change just the bits I needed to change: hex number, name, UWP and naval/scout base data.

edit: number of spaces matter

That still had some tabs in it.

This worked for me, and should work for you (assuming the copy from the forum page doesn't strip spaces):

If the spaces are stripped, the file was initially formatted to conform to the "GEnie/Sunbane" format on the page I linked before. The hex number starts on space 15, and the PGB starts on 52. TravellerMap doesn't care about the stellar data, so you can leave it off.

Try using this for diagnostics:

http://travellermap.com/tools/lintsec.html

(Integrating that into the maker pages is on the TODO list)

This is what I'm pasting in (note that all the columns line up in the Poster Maker window):

Code:
Hex Name UWP Remarks
---- --------------- --------- ----------------------
0103 Mirza E686530-2 Ag Ni
0104 Bahmanyar C964875-3 Ri
0105 Farrokh D689759-4 Ri
...

The site is guessing that the data is SEC (not T5 column-based or T5 tab delimited) since it doesn't have {Ix} (Ex) [Cx] in the headers. And SEC parsing requires PBG and Allegiance so it assumes none of the lines match.

I have now gotten this to work:

Code:

(remove the dash at the end. It is there to force the forum code to keep the terminal tab on the previous line, but will give an error in Traveller Map)

I put in Navy Bases and Amber Zones as place holders, along with the PBG, World Count, and Allegiance. As long as the tab remains in place, bases and zones can be left blank.
It does not like using "G" as a place-holder in Zones, and seems to require the Stars field, even if left empty. That empty field still needs to have a tab out to it, though.

Thanks for ALL he help!

And GypsyComet, that did the trick. Thanks so much!

Next question: Can anyone tell me how I format the routes in the metadata?

Can anyone tell me how I format the routes in the metadata?

That is definitely best served by looking at the example sectors. The routes are one of the simplest parts of the metadata file that need crafting (borders take more effort to wrap your head around).

If you don't need your routes to leave the area being mapped, and don't need different polities to have different color routes, the line is
<Route Start="0110" End="0207" />
using the two hex numbers.

I have now used the point and click route maker. (It's awesome.)

I'm now trying to give two different colors to two different political entities in the subsector, so I'm messing around with the metadata.

I have House Weylin and House Raptes.

Weylin will have the default Green routes. I want the Raptes to have a different color route. I swear, I figured it out last night with one of the routes between systems. Opened it this morning to set the allegiances on all of the Raptes routes... and I keep getting errors.

Can anyone help here? I assume I am able to add my own allegiances? But maybe not?

The routes work great as long as I'm not adding the allegiances.

Four-character allegiances are reserved for official T5SS data (to catch mistakes). Just use 2 or 3 character codes and you should be fine.

I'm really sorry this is so mysterious. I'll try and expose better error reporting, and maybe lift that restriction for unofficial data.

Is there a document somewhere that explains how to do these original works?

You know what? I think that's how I got it to work last night. I actually figured that out on my own, because there are only two slots (spaces) for Allegiance. So I shortened everything to two characters last night.

I woke up this morning, and bam... forgot that.

And listen, it isn't mysterious. It was built to do what you wanted it to do, and how you thought about the problems to solve and your approaches to them.

It's frankly AMAZING. And while it's taken me a while to wrap my head around it, now that I'm understanding it, it is really powerful and I'll be able to do lots of things to make pretty pictures for my friends. Which is the point of his part of the exercise!

Thanks so much for all the help!

Hmmm...

I've cut the Allegiance Codes down to two letters (and made some changes to names after thinking about the politics.)

I'm getting this error: "There is an error in XML document (4, 22)."

Which I'm thinking is still an error in the allegiance codes.

There is an error in XML document (4, 22).

That's line 4, in the element nearish character 22:

Code:
<Allegiance Code=“Dc”>The Daanae Coreward Trading Company</Allegiance>
123456789012345678901^

It's the "smart quotes" - “ ”

You need to use boring old quotes: " "
