We are made of meat.

Reminds me of a short story that I read a long time ago. The Earth had been contacted by aliens, who were doing all sorts of nice things for us. Then we obtained a book that they were reading themselves. The first thing understood was the title, "How to Serve Man". Sounded lovely, until they managed to read the rest of the book. Turns out it was a cookbook.

Hi, I believe that was also the plot of an episode of the Twilight Zone back in the 60's.

I wonder whether everyone says this about their teenage years, but the 80's (my teenage years) were a real sweet-spot for people who liked SF and RPGs:

SF went through it's proper birth in film: Alien, Blade Runner, Star Wars, Terminator. (before that there was only really 2001 ASO).

RPGs really took off - I guess Traveller was at its peak in the mid 1980s. There was just a ton of fan produced material out there.

Computers were advanced enough to play interesting games on (Elite, Bard's Tale, Ultima) but still simple enough that you could get under the hood and do your own programming - in fact you would buy magazines with BASIC code of games and spend hours typing it into your computer so you could play them.

SF writing was past its heyday of classic SF but cyberpunk was hitting its stride. Magazines like Omni were selling lots, there was an economic boom so everyone felt good.

Good days.

Films: The Day the Earth Stood Still, The War of the Worlds (1953 version), The Forbidden Planet, Destination Moon, and Disney's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. In TV, aside from the Twilight Zone and Outer Limits, you also had the original Star Trek series, and from Britain, UFO.

I was in uni, playing all-night (or all weekend) AD&D games - plus a bit of Traveller.

I never realised how much free time I had...

:)
