What happened to the Traveller webring?

I mean I've started to migrate away from Traveller, however much I love it, but I don't want to leave nor take a hiatus and come back to find the site gone with no player base.

In 2019, websites are places to buy online stuff that gets talked about on Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Hand-held computers do not orbit websites. Social media is where Traveller should be mentioned.

I quit facebook ages ago, I don't do twitter, I only watch vids with my YT account, nor do I do any other stuff other than post an occasional review on Amazon. To me the reason is because I've been with computers since 77 or 76, and I simply don't trust networks of any kind. Maybe I'm old fashioned, stupid, or just not with it in general, but to me social media is a massive invasion of my privacy, and I prefer surfing and finding related sites through links on other websites.

When I first went looking for Traveller I found the old Imperiumgames.com website in the mid 90s. I can't remember how I came across it, but it wasn't through FB (not sure it was around) nor anything that's around today. I think I found it through a Star Fleet Battles link for RPing … I can't remember the site. There wasn't a forum, and the company went belly up within a few years. Would it have benefitted from "social media"? Possibly. But like I say, I didn't find through any kind of social media.

try using this string in your Google search:
traveller -traveler -"RE Lee" -gypsies

I've since given up on searching for fan sites. There're still a few out there, but they're now few and far between, and the old standbys aren't helping me find them. I know it isn't the 80s nor the 90s, but it really feels like fan sites for games and scifi are drying up in the wake of monetization for a lot of other sites.

A lot of them are abandoned, hijacked, or bought out. And I think that's a shame. I mean whether it's for this game, or something like Star Frontiers, Star Fleet Wars miniatures (which is still around), I just don't see the robustness of fansites anymore. I won't shed any tears over it, but it is disappointing to see the net alter so much.

Blue Ghost, We both date from the same time, I got my first comp in 1977.... spent my last 18 years of employment doing Server support for a large computer maker, and I do not trust networks either.

Blueghost: I also was a computer guy, data center support and operation, and in my opinion an unsecured network is not to be trusted. A network not in my control is not secured.

A lot of people just are too trusting.

I shrug my shoulders at it. If someone wants to reinvent the Traveller webring (robject) then you got my vote.

I've said it before, Traveller, to me, is more of a security laboratory, but the official background, starships, weapons, ports of call, aliens, system generation, and its design that leans more towards its proto version (Leviathan, Kinunir, Snapshot) really fired my imagination.

At one time I wanted to shoot some Traveller media, but I've since fallen out of love with media, but I still love the game and all the enjoyment it gave me when I could actually play it other than just talk about it. And again, I think webrings were really conducive, but I'm just repeating myself here.

With T5 I hope the game continues to stay afloat, though it would be nice to see it thrive.

I'm sure there are still lots of dead Traveller links forever stored on the web. Anyway, I've mentioned to you before on how to find newly spawned Traveller content.

Stuck between a Freelance and a Zhodani

I mean, who wouldn't want their website sandwiched between Freelance and Zhodani?

Prev (Freelance Traveller) | Next (The Zhodani Base)

Lol! That would be unfair to the others. Maybe we could use a hash of the date to randomize the order of the new webring?

Let's do it one better: COTI has a dice roller. Let the dice sort them out.
