What kind of ships do people want to see?

navanod

SOC-12
Always looking ahead to my next project, I got to wondering what kind of ships (or buildings or people or whatever) you guys wanted to see. Most everyone doing renderings has done (or is doing) the basics - scout, free trader, far trader, subbie, lab ship, etc. And there's a lot of good, original work being done as well.

Anyway, I thought this would be a good place to compile a 'wish list' of stuff for people to reference. Fire away!

Well, if it's a wish list then #1 is the assault ship that I'm designing. Citadel is the class name. Nothing posted yet because I'm still busy with the vehicles and equipment designs.

And after that a Midu Agashaam.

Something like the Broadsword yet not the Broadsword, about J3/M3/A3, that carries a serious military Platoon complete with Rapid Deployment Vehicles. Armed and Armored to the Max of Course. AND Fully streamlined so that it can land.

Hmmm...are there deckplans floating around for the Midu Agashaam? ISTR seeing them someplace, but the location escapes me at the moment.

Vampire Fleets has deckplans for a damaged Midu Agashaam-class, but I have a bunch of issues with them. I've completed a redesign using MT rules with the intent to make my own deckplans but that project is waiting until I finish the assault ship.

It's *ugly*.

Quite true, but it's an ugly that says "just give me an excuse to burn a hole through your hull." Besides, you just think it's ugly because no one has done a good rendering of it yet.

The donut around the nose makes me curious too. I have a couple of ideas what it might be for but there is no mention in anything I've read.

Ooooo...

I'm tempted to put out a landscape-oriented issue of FT just so I can use that as the cover...

I'll second that. How about the Judge's Guild 800t Type C Cruiser?

I have a design that could be adjusted to fit those specifications. It is based on the Pilum design by Robert S. Dean I found on the HIWG CD. I've improved on it somewhat since he didn't have DonM's errata to work from in 1998.

Its a MT design - TL13, 800 tons, configuration 1AF (airframe), J4, 4G, Agility 4, 2 BLaser, 4 missile, 2 sandcaster (all triple turrets), armor 55F, no screens, 15 tons cargo, carries 2 20-ton fighters and 1 20-ton shuttle, crew 25.

There are only 4 marines (included in the crew figure of 25) but take out the fighters and there'd be room for more.

If you'd like to see a copy, send me a PM with your email address.

My quick run of the Cruiser numbers comes up with 70tons left? Has me wondering what I'm forgetting or if I did the basic math badly ;)

Anyway, should I break the Cruiser posts off into its own development thread for you navanod? Or do you want to keep it here?

Well, it seems there's some interest, and I've already had a first pass at it, so sure, that would be good. that'll keep this thread on somewhat the right track.

Done: Judges Guild Mercenary Cruiser Reimagined

(let me know if you'd like the title changed)

If you have a subscription to JTAS Online, you might take a look at he 400T USL merchant design I came up with ( Oxen and Gryphons and Eagles). It's a square box design just like the old JG designs. The Golden Gryphon class is a J2 design; the Placid Ox class is a J1 variant, and the Soaring Eagle class is a J3 variant.

This was the ship class I provided for my players in two now-defunct online campaigns. The Silver Sphinx was a good ship, even though it only managed to do three jumps in two campaigns ;-).

Moved: I think this fits better here as a proposal for another ship to tackle. The other thread is for navanod's take (and extraneous chatter ;) ) on the JG Merc Cruiser.

EDIT: I don't mind, but it wasn't posted as a proposal for another ship to tackle[*], but as a comment on the remarks about internal proportions. I went to considerable trouble to keep the various departments within 10% of their official tonnage (much closer than that, actually).

[*] I'd actually misunderstood the original question to mean what new ships we'd like deckplans for, not what ships we'd like pictures of. And I already have deckplans of the Gryphons. ;)[**]
[**] That said, I'd be tickled pink to have someone do a rendering of a Gryphon, preferrably the Silver Sphinx.

Thanks but I have the HIWG CD also. When I say Serious Platoon I mean 3 Squads In Grav AFVs and A Platoon Commander in a Grav MBT. Rapid Deployment shells if neccesary and a landable ship to recover them when needed.

I'll have to work up a design I guess. If I ever get the time, right now I am spending what little time I have on the Amderstun Project and it ain't gettin nowhere fast:o

I'm working on one of those - but it is for a battalion of 450. Please post the design when you work it up.

Did you have a mercenary cruiser in mind or is this to be a Navy vessel?

MercCruiser, can't see a Navy bothering with a vessel that only carries a Platoon.

Design may be a while, will probably not be MT (although I may use the Astrin and Trepida as the carries craft) although it should be fairly close. I tend to use HGS for rough drafts and then pull them into My Houseruled System for polishing (mixed CT/HG/Striker/MT/TNE).

Since you sir are really good with MT, where did I see a reference to Rapid Deployment Aeroshells?

The only mention I know of - and it is just a mention - is in the notes under the Trepida and Astrin designs. All this tells us is that the two vehicles are designed to fit it so there are no performance, weight, or volume figures.

It seems like a cool idea but I've scrapped trying to design one. My opinion = drop capsules are useful to get troopers down but the vehicles doesn't need it when they already have grav drives and armor protection. Plus lately I've built some assault shuttles that have the capacity to carry vehicles. but none of that means that I won't steal the idea if you make one and it provides an advantage I haven't thought of.

On second thought, maybe the aeroshell is there to enhance survivability. The armor protection for the Trepida and Astrin is pretty weak (in MT - others may vary) so maybe this is a way to get them into the fight in one piece. Get enough down intact and maybe their numbers can make up for individual weaknesses - making them an 1108 version of the M4 Sherman and M3 Halftrack.
