I've wanted to run or be a part of one too -- but I know most people would be so bored with multi-generational ships .. lol , being so used to the "hey, it only takes 1 week!" .. lol
Yeah -- funny thing with my "cultural" ideas is that on all the ships -- those with staterooms and long term stays -- Hydroponics is a must -- thus -- the crew has a ready supply of food
algae and fish mostly -- but for 2 meals/day -- it keeps the crew going .. so a Garden-world isn't really needed -- as the mainworld could be a large asteroid or a barren rock -- or a mars like world -- or even an ice-ball. so a small Hydroponics section can say feed 20 -- while on a big ship -- it covers say 600+. Since the Mainworld is Hi, Ind -- agricultural resources is a concern -- so they really went big on Hydroponics to solve that issue ..
Fusion engines to provide energy -- GG fuel skimmers to get & purify -- Hydroponics for food -- housing modules for the folks -- and they can 'generally' stay anywhere ..
If you dont have the "Food in Space" article -- I can give ya the link -- it goes over in nice detail the food and space requirements of Hydroponics and the nutrient replacements that will go with it --
