What's cool about the JTAS

I'm slowly reading through my JTAS compliations I bought last year.

Great freakin' Traveller material in there. I just love 'em! I can't say enough about them.

You know what I like? It's the "little things."

I just finished reading JTAS 3, so as an example of a "little thing" that I think is cooler than snail snot, I look down on pg. 28.

There's a little blurb there. If you're just skimming, you might miss it. It's not part of any article--it's just there, waiting for you to read it.

It says:

The government factor in the Universal Planetary Profile need not be a nmber 0-9 or a letter A-F. For example, M could be used to indicate a military government, perhaps a junta or coup.

And, that's it. It's just there. A cool little rule blurb.

God, I love my JTAS's.

...Oh, I forgot to mention, LKW's example, in his "From The Management" column of JTAS 2, of using the existing items in Traveller and modifying them to make something new.

The laser pistol he designs is full of all sorts of coolness.

I find the Traveller News Service extremely interesting. To my knowledge, the Spinward Marches was the first "living" campaign setting in role-playing. The Judges Guild's Wilderlands of High Fantasy and TSR's Greyhawk were both "snapshot in time" settings, where everything was static until the characters appeared. But events in the Spinward Marches continued regardless of character actions. Characters were literally tiny specks in a very big universe.

FASA picked up this idea and used it very successfully in the Battletech universe. TSR attempted to replicate it with "big events" like the Greyhawk Wars, but without much fan support.

There are also little adventure hooks sprinkled through the news service.

Yes, I liked "From the Management" Issue #4, where they discuss the rationale behind weapons in the TU.

GURPS Traveller did this too, but it's finally nice to see the CT "original". GURPS gets into other types of technology that's in/out from Ultra-Tech supplement, as well.

I bought the CD, and am slowly going thru them. Very nice stuff though.
