what's d20 ?

can anyone help . im still using little black books + have played lots of d+d ( 1st ed + bit of 2nd ) . im curious about t20 . are the rules self contained ? they are advertised as requiring a d20 core book , but i cant seem to find one of those . do i really need it to play ?

By Core book, they usually mean the 3rd ED D&D Player's Handbook, which started the whole d20 revolution.

D20 is TSR\WOTC\HASBRO in house rule system. DND 3rd edition is based on it but it also has an open game liscencse so you can use the basic system in a role playing game without having to license it. IMHO it is not a "generic" system, just a good starting point for rules. Using TSR etc. D20 system Quicklink has come up with a pretty good D20 converstion to Traveller. I like to think of the D20 sytem and the games sprung from it as being like Quake and the mods it has spawned.

The Star Wars book is actually a very good choice instead of the D&D book, just as Bozzutoman said. With the exception that automatic fire is different, everything else is explained very well.
