What's This All About?

hunter

Ancient - Absent Friend
While in the Lone Star chatroom a discussion came up about Starports. There is some good material out there on Starports for Traveller (GURPS Starports), but the one thing we don't have is a way to generate a generic starport when we need one pretty much on the spur of the moment. Let's face it, Travellers pass through a lot of starports during their adventures, but how much detail do you actually have on all of them?

So that's the project. A modular(?) building system for creating quick and easy starports! Liam and Shane have volunteered to kind of oversee this effort, but basically were trying to get everyone's ideas on the best way to implement such a thing and what it should contain as far as material.

Do note that material submitted to this particular forum will become the property of QLI. I you don't want your ideas possibly ending up published, don't post it here. You have been warned ;)

Howdy folks,

As the boss said we're looking to do a starport creation book. A few of us hashed out the basics of what we'd like to see in the project, but as this is designed to be useful for the Traveller players Hunter has decided to open this up so we can come up with the best book we can.

Liam and I are overseeing this only in as much as making sure that we stay on track and work towards what we're after, and guiding the direction we're going in a bit - remember this is a group effort and everyone's opinion is valid*.

So, sound off with any ideas you have and lets make this work!

See you portside!

Shane

*= (unless it disagres with me of course, in which case you will be ritually sacrificed... ;) )

For once I want a piece of this!!!....how are these ideas going to be handled, posted here, basicaly as a list, or just an idea at a time, how should this be orginized, how doi get my ideas to you guys??

Just throw them out as and when Jim. Starta topic with them all in, or break them down into individuals ones - your choice.

Y'know, I see a Coffee Juice salesman in the NPC chapter....

Welcome on board TJ!

Shane

Well then Tj, you'd simply post your ideas Here, to this page (maybe on a separate topic, like..but like da Boss sez.. its a group effort, and it will benefit ALL. It will of course become property of CoTI/Qli..).

Putting it into cohesive form for all to use, that comes later..and Shane & I get that. FINAL editing/ etc-da Boss's job!(see Hunter/ Ancient, etc etal).

Don't worry about spelling--we can handle that dept. off stage. Be clear and concise what you're writing. 'Kay? Have at it! :D

handle it like/similar to Startown liberty, use 6,10,20 sided dice. roll for size, then roll for "content", type of landing areas, type of buildings, type of maintenance, some one must decide how many roles to do to accomplish/finish the starport, And the amount of infor Each roll covers.

these are just first off the top of head thoughts.

Roll for Areas and how congested work ares are
roll for weather?
roll for cargos available?
This could be important..roll for area surrounding starport, sea, mountain, plains, city,
town, villiages, ect, ect,. (no telling where you might come down).

have MANY pre-made, compleate, fairly detailed Starports, all different classes, shapes and sizes, ect, ect. leave some "blank" spots so GM can fill in "stuff"......just roll for one....

I know Hunter was keen to make this more a toolkit and less a book of example ports. But that would make a good TA (IMHO) to do straight after this - showcase the system and support it, and all.

Shane

roll for "seperate" parts of a starport - i.e.,
seperate blds, pads, strips. hangers, roads, fuel storage, ect ect. then roll to "assemble" the starport. do it for all classes, of course this is only "basic" idea. just want to get this out so others can look and work on it.

roll for day or nite activitys, very important, means how many folks are working, and what they are doing, after all only bad guys come out at nite...HEHE..also could roll for amount of TRAFFIC movement...how many vehickles!!!

Blds...roll for height, roll for content, role for
number of occupents, role for security systems. role for area covered. roll for type of bussiness.
roll for area of starport. roll for number of guards. roll for materiak bld is made of (might want to blow it Up). roll for lighting, poor good average great.

boy this oughta keep you busy, not bad for 2AM

more to follow

roll for aliens, roll for # of aliens, roll for type of aliens. roll for civilian or military aliens.

roll for # of ships on ground. roll for type of ships on ground. rool for areas that ships are parked at. roll for activitys around ships.

Don't forget TJ, a lot of what will modify the starport depends on the UPP of the world itself- technology, and population...

example--Although its *possible to have A-class facilities with very few people (and LOTSA robots)..it would be a rare thing indeed. Likewise, a planet known to welcome tradesman, like you..but with a X-class port, might offer a grassy field near a small lake for frontier refuelling, a warm fire, and a grass hut. (no TAS hotel there!).

Now yer talkin..Great stuff..(we'll se if we can get ya and others to work onn these "tables"..)- yes- I too have "Startown Liberty".. :D

A nod to those who have gone before:
http://www.pocketempires.com/Eaglestone/StarportModuleCatalog.html

Now then. Not to duplicate, but to expand...
The plan is to be modular. Certain level starports require certain things for the starport rating (A, B, etc. including spaceports F, G, H..) in addition, the large starports will require more of a certain type of module (ie landing pads or warehouses)...
Already identified modules:
Landing
Parking (hangars)
Beacon (ATC)
Fuel Depot
Warehousing
Ship Maintenance
Ship Construction
Concourse
Facility Maintenance

The concourse is where all the 'stuff' is:
The Scout Lounge
The Hiring Hall
Captain's Guild
Spacer's Guild
The Lone Star
The Travellers' Aid Society
Starship architect (Naval architect?)
University departments
Space academies
Conference/exhibition centers
Brokerages
Various entertainment centers
Also there's possible hotel space
with or without Alien Environment spaces
and their attendant 'stuff'
halls, conference rooms, bars, restaurants, swimming pools (wierd humaniti) and theaters.
Habitat Modules:
housing
factory
farm
park
Offices and work areas
including the brig, and self defense areas (screens and weapons)
Labs
Hospital (sick bay)
Engineering module - orbitals require other 'stuff' - Environmental, station keeping, gravitics, power plant, etc..
GT: Starports also lists armor...
now all we have to do is put it together without all the 'accounting' of other systems

roll for "UNKNOWN" dangers, fuel spills, ruptured fuel tanks, deadly gasses, bad guys.

Yes, Liam, i understand different tech levels and different size ports are involved, just hade to throw all this out there so other can look it over and grab an idea and run with it!!! ;)
