When Good Random Generators Go Bad

What? No... Aerrkhukhkaekougulghtursksoethaegenughz is the shortened form! :D

[Actually: the name above is the overlapped visual of 2433 (Aerrkhukhkaekouguengdoung) and 2633 (Ightursksoethaegenughz). ;)]

(Although really, I think the point is still valid ;))
I rather disagree. And so would the 3,000 residents of the town of Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, I imagine. ;)

(That's all one word, by the way. For some reason the posting software insists on breaking it up into two pieces.)

:oo:

Well, actually, many of them might agree!

[From http://llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.co.uk/history.php: 'is signposted as Llanfairpwllgwyngyll and is known to locals as Llanfairpwll or Llanfair. P.G.']

I grew up relatively close to that place (but on the right side of the border), and everyone apart form tourists and tourist tat manufacturers and the lets get more tourists council committee called it Llanfair P.G.

VonPickles: I'm not aware that the Welsh are well known for omelettes. More data please?

Um, yeah, sorry about that. On my TO-DO list (but so far in the future the OTU will be a historical epic) is dealing with overlapping labels on the map.

Nope. The name is the name, even if it was the result of some 19th century marketing notion. Truth or Consequences, New Mexico (or 'T or C', as locals call it) got its name for roughly the same reason -- doesn't change the fact that that's the town's legal name.

There could be similar reasons why the two Vargr worlds were given such insane (to us) toponyms. Or rather, since I'm sure the reasons have never entered into canon, any one of us can make up a good reason.

Ah, dealing with that on the map would seem quite a challenge... the sector details handled the those extremely long names very well!

I remembered a song from long ago and found this on the webs:

Quantum Jump's 1979 hit "The Lone Ranger" contains the lyric "'Taumatawhakatangihangakoayauo-tamateaturipukakapikimaungahoro-nukypokaiwhenuakitanatahu." This is largely gibberish though its origin is the 57-letter Maori place name 'Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauatamateapokaiwhenuakitanatahu'. Our Maori expert informs us that "though this term is promoted as being one of the longest words in the world, grammatically it is more of a phrase; by definition, it simply talks about the place where Tamatea Pokaiwhenua played his flute to his lover." Given that "The Lone Ranger" track is supposedly performed (in role) by a native American it is, in any case, odd that the track features such a Maori utterance!

I suspect that given the average age of Traveller players is probably in the early to mid fifties, I'm not the only one who would have remembered the song. I think we should name a planet after 'The Lone Ranger' lyric in honour of this fact :)

A lot of us are early 40's and late 30's, but there are still teens and 20's... I've had to sign a T20 rulebook .... while subbing in a high school 2 years ago.

I think the base genes came from labradors.

As with humans and apes, dogs and the Vargr share a common ancestor. The Vargr were not geneered from dogs anymore than humans evolved "from" apes.

Found the quote in AM3 on page 2: "These transplanted carnivores were of the family Canidae, and most certainly of the genus Canis.

The grey wolf is family Canidae, genus Canis, and species lupus.

As a subspecies of the grey wolf, dogs are family Canidae, genus Canis, species lupus, and subspecies familiaris.

The Vargr are geneered from stock which was family Canidae, most likely genus Canis, and species unknown.
