Where in Charted Space...

On my old maps, dating back to when Grandfather wrote them down on a napkin at TGI Fridays, I can find Ley Sector and the Glimmerdrift Reaches. Where is the Crucis Margin and Gateway?

Yep. It helps. But it does raise another question. If the Gateway Domain is an Imperial "state" then why does half its Sectors lie outside Imperial Borders (the maps I have show the Trailing Imperial border running through Ley Sector and encroaching on the Glimmerdrift Reaches)?

I'd highly recommend that you get the book. It's the best treatment of an astrographical area that I've ever seen, and it covers your questions.

In brief, the reason that the Gateway Domain was created was politically motivated, in the event that the Imperium decided to expand in that direction. It is one of the few frontiers left where such expansion could occur. Doesn't mean that the territory belongs to the Imperium, but that the Imperial territory in this region is administered by someone that serves the Emperor in exchange for being given such a high level of authority.

Hope that helps,
Flynn

Ooooh. That makes me happy. It looks like the Imperium is no longer being treated as a static political body (one of my problems with the campaign model, the Imperium never seemed to expand, just defend itself against encroachment).

The Third Imperium was a stagnant body, to be sure, hemmed in on almost all sides and unable to expand without war. The Imperium had grown decadent by 1100, and it's no wonder that the Rebellion occurred. Looking at it in hindsight, it's much easier to get the picture of the Imperium as a dinosaur that had grown too large and then became stuck in a tar pit, killing itself as it thrashed to get free.

I think more products, particularly those set in the forward storyline of 1248 and later, will show polities as growing, expanding and evolving, as the tastes and desires of the authors shifts in that direction over time.

As the hobby and the fans involved change to fit the times, so, too, has the campaign model. I think you'll really enjoy the Gateway book. Here's the official blurb:
