Where'd Everybody go?

Blue Ghost

SOC-14 5K
Knight
This place used to be jumping when I first signed on several years ago. Now it's dead.

Where did everyone go to? Where are the regular Travellers? The Barons, the knights? The other usual suspects?

It's summer. I noticed a couple of weeks ago that posts dropped off on the weekends.

Plus, we've all covered a lot in the last 9 years or so. I know I've run out of some creativity.

I noticed that you joined the same year I did. This and the TML were just about the only internet places for Traveller at the time. Now there's Mongoose and ComStar and a bunch of other sites that may or may not have forums. Plus there was several instances of bad blood on this site a while back. I see almost all of the people I had to put on 'Ignore' aren't even on the site anymore. Troublemakers.

But that could cover most, if not all, of what you are (or aren't) seeing.

That gave me a chuckle S4 (I'm gonna regret even admitting that I expect), but please, not even as a joke. Somebody may take it wrong.

And yeah, it's summer*, there's this thing called "outside" full of "stuff" that tends to distract. But I also noticed a decided drop off on most or all the Traveller group forums as well, even the TML. Maybe some of us old ones are just a little tired of Traveller. It'll pass ;)

* well, in this hemisphere anyway, no slight intended to those under the southern stars :)

Bloody hemi-sphereists. Keep that up and we'll send more god-awful tourist ads your way. ;)

But as is it's nearing the end of the financial year - with the mad "dash for cash" scenario as accountants call for the books.
And unfortunatly one can't just blast out of the spaceport on a battered old Beowulf and head for the Marches when the auditors come a calling.

I've been working on other things the last while... I joined just after I was running a CT campaign, but that's been over for about 4 years.

Also, I've been falling behind on a lot of projects the last couple of years, so I don't have time to work on stuff for a game I'm not actively playing.

I've noticed the same. You'd expect them to be with the Mongeese, but it's quiet there, too.

I'm spending more time on Faceook, but 90% of that is non-Traveller.

I'm busy writing and doing other stuff. I posted some interesting material here recently - the big galaxy pic, the link to the Extreme Architecture page with the lily pad floating cities etc. - but right now I have a Zero Battalion fan article to finish before tackling an article for Traveller, possibly for FreeTrav, and then my fantasy novel. I sense movement there, and I want to clear the decks so I can settle down to that.

But yeah - whenever possible I drop by here, but when it's the same old conversations or when the latest posting was three days ago, there doesn't seem much incentive to come here often, does there?

BG, I'm not sure where everyone else is, but I went to Iraq.

I rarely have time to post but I drop in a couple of times a week* to see what's new.

(*when I have time and when the service is up)

It's good to be able to keep in touch with the normal world from over here.

But it just struck me as I was typing - that there is a scary thought. I mean that I think of this place as 'normal' :oo:.

Roleplaying is getting booooring and Traveller is essentially a dead franchise these days. Off to greener pastures and more interesting things mostly

Well I'm still here. I don't always have a lot to say but I'm still here.

But I thought the summer months were always slow: people away on holiday, doing outdoorsy sorts of things, etc.

I amhere, not as much as before, but check in more or less once a day.
Summer is here and it is too hot to be inside.

Still present.

I am still around, but as net connection is sketchy these days, I am not on as often as I would like, and I tend to lurk. I do read the stuff, but mostly don't have to much to say.

I have now actualy got round to running a fairly heavily rule modded (combat wise) T20 campaign. To be honest since T20 seems a minority and the boards there are pretty sparsely used and because I house rule anyway and we're set in GATEWAY, lots of the posts on here aren't that relevant to me. Having said that some have been very useful, e.g. those that discuss univesal things, trade, piracy, economics, atmospheres etc. Some however I avoid e.g. sector specific or wrangles over rules interpretations. Overall I enjoy these boards, keep it up guys.

Umm, am I the odd ball that checks these forums at least 3 times a day? :oo:

Note: If anyone needs something Traveller related to do, feel free to read through my 250 page The Old Earth (for Terran Dawn setting) and heckle or praise the parts you hate/like. :) Content is there, but still highlighted and missing lots of art.

Yeah, I only check once these days...

I think the question of where people have gone is a feeling that things cannot actively be debated as grognards shut them down. Even though, I think, all the grognards here are really fine people and do not ignore or shut people down there is a perception that the CoI is run by jackboots.

Parallel to this, I think, we are stimulating contraversy or pushing the boundaries of what is Traveller. Remember, how we speculated on the confluence between Lovecraft & Traveller...that is going to be real. Are we developing our edge to feed back to designers? No, we might criticize it once it comes out but we are not pushing the envelope anymore.

We are also buried under the splashpage of the QLI product page (for which there has also precious little product) also deterring interested visitors.

I don't believe it's forum specific. In a debate over at the Mongoose Traveller forums CotI was accused of being a dying forum. I ended up taking the time to count all Traveller posts on both forums for a given week recently at the beginning of May. To my own surprise, CotI won:

MGT Forum - 240 posts
CotI Forum - 304 posts

As a member of both forums, I think both have less traffic then they did a year ago. Sorry no statistics gathered a year ago to support my feeling. :)
