Where'd Everybody go?

You know, if you're single, alone, don't have many responsibilities, can't afford to do too much, then computer games are all right. I went through some rough times, and, not to sound too therapeutic here, they helped.

But getting out helps too. And that's really what I miss about gaming. Meeting people. But then again, I like that about all activities. I used to belong to a couple of film groups here locally, and I met some fairly good people. Not gamers, but intelligent, responsible, reasonable, and good folks. It's important to do that. It's also important to hook up with what you like doing.

I love games. I love the imaginative aspect of them, but they eat into a lot of my free time, which, to be honest, isn't so free. This is part of the reason I searched for a local group. But Cest la vie. If I can't do that, then I'll putz around here and other forums.

I've still got stories and adventures on the back-burner for Traveller, but between holding down two jobs (up at 4AM, in bed at 10PM), life's been a little rough.

Still, coming here and reading the REAL Traveller posts, is refreshing. Even if I can't do it anymore, it's still kind of fun to poke around the topic.

I can't even remember when I had my last FTF game...

I guess that's why I do things like posting and writing these days. I can do it by myself, I can start and stop whenever I have time.

Maybe after my novel is published and I am rich (snicker into hand) I can actually FTF game again...sigh

Good news here.

I've got commits from 3 players so far, so our FTF Trav game will be resuming in late July. We're expecting to pick up our B5 game about where it left off. Also, we may add a local couple to the group for 5 players, and one of my original MGT playtesters returns to the area in two weeks so we're gonna see if we can dragoon him into the game again.

The local D&D 4E group broke up, so we're going to see if we can get some recruits there, too. At least two have expressed interest.

There's a chance I'll be doing week on/week off interleaving with a local Pathfinder RPG game. If so, we'll combine into one big group of about a dozen or so (I'd expect about 7-8 of these to be core.)

Anyway, things are looking up around here for getting a Trav game together again.

Where did everyone go? Well, for me it's been a massive intrusion of Real Life. I've been looking for long term employment ever since a layoff over a decade ago and it seems that an unprecedented natural disaster has provided me with just such employment.

Last April I got a sort contract to perform a standards survey at the Ingalls yard in Pascagoula, Mississippi. I was still there checking inventories, auditing training programs, and conducting inspections when the Deepwater Horizon rig exploded on the 21st.

For once it seems I was in the right place, at the right time, with the right skills. :(

Anyway, I've been working nearly 24/7 ever since on a variety of ever shifting projects and that work load has no end in sight. They're still cleaning up Prince William Sound twenty years after the Exxon Valdez and that spill is baby shit compared to what's lurking under the waves of the Gulf.

I'm back in New Hampshire this weekend thanks to Hurricane Alex, the storm imposed a lull in operations, and I'll spend the long holiday weekend packing up my very dusty apartment into a storage cube. After that, I'll be flitting between extended stay suites, furnished rooms, and vessels at sea for the foreseeable future.

Have fun with Our Olde Game and keep up the good fight. I see that Mongoose has decided to ⌧ up the Darrians next, so the good fight still needs to be fought.

Take care,
Bill

Yeah, I just wish it didn't sound so final. Bill's a darned good contributor here, and that sounded like a last wave goodbye.
Hope you can find time to look in on us, Bill, and good luck with those southern belles, too. :)

I spent the last 4 days at a convention... board gaming... of about 20 adults.

Aramis, I am SOOOO jealous...

I would post here more, but at least half the threads i post to seem to come to a screeching halt immediately afterwards. Am I that obnoxious?

it was a blast. next year's Denali con is scheduled for the same spot... Weekend closest to or including 4 July 2011... lodge is 20 mi north of Trapper Creek.

Just about the time I expect to be having carpal tunnel surgery on the other hand. Also too far away for me to travel (unless I win the PHC sweepstakes).

You could always seek out working passage as a deck ape on a steamer....

Well, look at it this way; burgers is a recession proof industry.

Me, I sell pizza in the evenings. 20 years ago I turned down a gig at Lucasfilm because I didn't have (or didn't feel I had) enough technical training. Yeah, I still kick myself in the backside about that decision.

Thanks Shapeshifter, but I didn't want to know what was in the burgers...

Thinking about it, it does perhaps answer the OP's qustion, though.

I haven't been around for a few reasons, most having to do with real life. I got laid off from my job, my Dad who I had been taking care of died, and a bunch of secondary crap has cropped up. Traveller just took a back seat to all that.

EDIT: And I got to admit, the Traveller Edition War is a bit of a turn-off as well.
