Which CT Rules Set do you use?

I started with the LBB's in '81, bought the Traveller Book, all the LBB expansion books (mercenaries, scouts, et al), went on to MegaTraveller, bought almost anything with Traveller references in it (even the really cruddy stuff, alas). Quite frankly, I was a collector without realizing it.
Then along comes the future (and current) wife; new priorities, books falling apart; toss it all [gasp! most of it was falling apart, anyway...]; 15-year hiatus from gaming. Then I find out a younger cousin is a gamer...
Hooked again, and loving every minute of it.

I now use a heavily-modified CT, with mostly High Guard elements for ship designs (scarily, I drew up most of the design system I use from memory... I think, perhaps, I spent ***WAY*** too much time designing HG ships!)

The Traveller Book.

Because it was my first ever Traveller Book.

Best regards,

Ewan

Exactly the same response.

I'll add that my TTB has a couple of added notes in it -- the pulse laser/beam laser dichotomy is missing from TTB, but should be there.

to start 1977 books 1-3, now days - a mix of all versions CT, MT, some TNE and beginning to filter in a bit of MGT as well (mostly Chargen).

shucks, nobodys perfect.

I first owned the original 1977 boxed set and loads of supplements and a few adventures, sold most of them other than the original boxed set and got the reprint books instead, sold them and got loads of Mongoose stuff, and sold that to replace it with the later 1980 boxed classic Traveller books and classic supplements and adventures, some of which I had owned before (I prefer the individual books to the awkward reprints). But I have since updated the 1980 books with all the missing stuff from Starter Traveller (theres quite a lot missing from the 1980 books that was in the 1977 books and Starter Traveller- such as patrons). So I use a hybrid of all the classic rules now.

I originally planned to buy back only the books I would use for family gaming with my kids, as my daughter is coming to the age where she could play. But before I knew it I had bought loads of adventures that I didnt have originally (Ebay is a great thing), as well as many of my old supplements. And now I also have a load of Judges Guild stuff that I didnt have originally either. So I now have more than I used to have! But I just cant bear the thought of living without my Traveller stuff I keep coming back to it when I get bored of computer gaming (which is quite often these days). I am really looking forward to playing a few games with all of my kids but it will be a few years yet before most of them are old enough.

As I posted in the thread I started I prefer the original 1977 LBBs. I like the idea if setting up my own little corner of the galaxy without having to think about the 3I. Just recently re-acquired the 77 set via eBay (my ex-wife sold just about all my Traveller stuff while I was in Alaska in 92 courtesy of the Air Force). Looking forward to getting back into Traveller, probably for now just creating my own characters and doing solo play.

This is exactly what I do but within the 3I framework provided. I tend to create my own subsectors and planets for fun but when I play I often use some of the 3I setting for convenience ie the Spinward Marches sector, travel times, equipment, weapons, along with the usual ships. But I dont go for the history too much - its an interesting aside to an adventure I think, but I cant see it being too relevant to my games.

Certainly I dont feel there is anything in the second version of the basic books that prevents me getting completely away from the 3I setting. And there is a lot of good changes that were made when they were updated. Although there is also a lot missing from them as well - the whole of the patrons section is missing entirely and also a heck of a lot of the background description on play methods etc that was in Starter Traveller (I only know because I got a free copy of the Starter Traveller download version). Once I had figured out how much was missing I printed out all the relevant stuff and stuck it/wrote it into the covers my 1980s books so I now have the 'definitive' copy of Traveller I think.

But if you want the best copy without going through all that then Starter Traveller has to be the most complete of all of the versions IMHO.

Yeah I've got Starter Traveller, the rules book was the only thing my ex some how didn't sell. I also recently bought another complete set of Starter Traveller from eBay. But I still prefer the original, the 1977 LBBs, to all other editions.

Actually its the rumours table that is missing from the 1980 Book 3, not the patrons table, although patrons and random encounters were all altered in Starter Traveller for the better (IMO) so Ive pasted copies from Starter Traveller into my 1980 Book 3.

I originally played with the LBBs, the first CT rules I actually owned were the FFE reprints. However, a few weeks ago I had the great good fortune to obtain a copy of both The Traveller Book (hardcover) and The Traveller Adventure and I think these have almost immediately become my favourites.

Very LTTP, as always...

Anyway, been gaming with various version of Traveller since '85 I think, after I finally figured out that D+D and Shadowrun weren't the only games in existence. Went through CT, MT, TNE, T4 (gah!) and now MgT. I ran MgT for two short campaigns about two years ago and it worked just fine (barring some inter-player issues which imploded both groups).

However, I popped open my FFE Reprints recently (like, three days ago on a whim) and I discovered...I don't know how to put it, that I feel more interested in CT? Maybe it's the writing or something but, despite the age of the rules and some other issues (like armor), I feel like CT would simply be more fun than the MgT games I ran.

Hard to put into words really. Something about the way its written pops off the page and says "Come on, let's play!" Maybe I ought to start another thread on this, but there's just something here that pulls at me, and doesn't in MgT (despite more choices, unified mechanics, etc). It's interesting really. Hmm. Maybe I WILL start that thread...

I started with the LBB in '79, have gone through several dead tree copies of them (though still have my very tatty 1st ed LBB's around). Nowadays I use an e-copy of T4 on my notepad. Though I also have a copy of starter CT and 2nd ed HG on it too.

Just to mention I've recently got the FFE CD which includes the 2011 updates, and I can confirm both the 1977 version of CT 1-3 and 1979 version of HG are there, as well as The Traveller Book and the Starter editions.
