Wolf at the Door

Originally, I envisioned a standard Traveller campaign following the adventures of common men aboard a tramp freighter--you know, the "everyman's" hero type of story.

I roll stats in my games with a straight 2D roll. When my player rolled a 12 for his SOC, then raised it during chargen, I started thinking...I took the player rolling up the Marquis as a challenge and re-worked what I had planned for the campaign. In effect, the NPC patron-type-stuff was changed...allowing the player to the PC patron.
I like this.

Flexibility and adaptability are good qualities in a referee.

CAMPAIGN OUTLINE

Episode One:

paragraph.gif
The crew of a common free trader is surprised when the ship is charted by the most powerful high noble in the subsector, the Marquis Terran Tukera.

paragraph.gif
The reason for the charter, at first unclear, is hinted when the flight plan is filed. The ship will travel from its homeport of Aramis to the Marquis' fief--the Barony of Natoko. From there, the ship will travel into the asteroid fields at Patinir before refuelling at the gas giants orbiting the Tukera estates on Lewis, finally making its destination on the troubled world of Aramanx (referred to locally as "the Powderkeg of the Towers Cluster").

paragraph.gif
Sabotage to the ship is discovered during the first jump (Aramis-Natoko). Indications are the ship was being made to be more easily hijacked (tampering with the ship's water and weapons systems).

paragraph.gif
At Natoko (the Marquis' Barony), the ship is refitted with a military grade transponder and completely overhauled--to make sure no other systems have been tampered with. A contingent of Imperial Marines is loaded aboard a 5000 ton Tukera super hauler and sent as vanguard, preceeding the Marquis' route to Aramanx.

paragraph.gif
But, as the ADROIT PURSUIT (the PC's chartered craft) enters the asteroid belt at Patinir, they are greeted with a distant, bright flash and sensor readings of gamma radiation. The 5000 ton Tukera vessel has been hit with an illegal nuclear weapon.

Episode Two:

paragraph.gif
A starship combat encounter ensues among the asteroids at Patinir.

paragraph.gif
But, before the two vessels can trade more than a few shots, the Marquis' own security detail turns traitor. A handpicked, Tukera Vemene squad captures the PC's ship from within without firing a single shot.

paragraph.gif
When the Marquis' secruity team was brought aboard, a single, large cargo container was loaded into the PURSUIT's hold. This container was believed to have held the Vemene BattleDress units. Instead, it is revealed now that it really a modified, 8-person cold crib similar to those long term units used by the Navy's Frozen Watch. It is the Vemene intention to put the Marquis and the entire crew into long-term cold sleep.

Episode Three:

paragraph.gif
A game session of gun combat in the bowls of the ADROIT PURSUIT. The pilot and navigator were left on the bridge, under guard, to resume their duties (dock with the enemy vessel) as the rest of the crew (and the Marquis and his body guard) are put into cold sleep. But the two PURSUIT crewmembers on the bridge have other plans--by session's end, they have the bridge.

Episode Four:

paragraph.gif
The gun combat encounter in the hold begins (crew vs. Vemene traitors).

paragraph.gif
A new ship shows up on the PURSUIT's sensors--a local shuttle answering the PURSUIT's Signal GK.

paragraph.gif
The enemy ship continues to pound the PURSUIT with laser fire as, inside, the crew fights the Vemene for control of the ship. In short order, the PURSUIT is again under the control of the PCs.

paragraph.gif
But, the PURSUIT is outgunned, and the ship has taken tremendous damage. The captain sees one chance--the velocity of the PURSUIT is greater than the M-drives on the enemy vessel can compensate. If the PURSUIT can withstand the attacks from the enemy vessel for just a little longer, the PURSUIT will find itself out of attack range from that other vessel.

Episode Five:

paragraph.gif
A twist of fate: The second vessel--the shuttle--opens up on the PURSUIT. The shuttle is working in conjunction with the other enemy vessel. There is no way that the PURSUIT can escape both enemy vessels (the ambush was well planned--one enemy vessel well armed and the other a fast and maneuverable ship...while the Vemene troops aboard the PCs ship battle to take the vessel from within).

paragraph.gif
Another twist of fate: The hatches on some of the cold berth units (from the container in the hold) open. The crew, having to defend themselves from the Vemene troops and repair battle damage done to their vessel, haven't had time to examine the cargo container closely. Another squad of Vemene troops (having been awake and alert inside the cold berth for some time) spill out. These troops rush to take the ship from within again.

paragraph.gif
Another game session of gun combat with the PC's ship...while space combat ensues with the two enemy vessels. It looks grim for the PCs and their ship.

paragraph.gif
Most of these new Vememe troops are captured--sealed in a room, the doors (and atmospheric controls) controled by the bridge crew.

paragraph.gif
But, one of the PCs finds one of the enemy Vemene comm units. He speaks with the crew of the shuttle...

paragraph.gif
And, he learns that the enemy following them in the two ships ARE VEMENE AS WELL. THEY'RE TUKERA PERSONNEL!

paragraph.gif
Two Type J meson guns disappeared from a Tukera vessel back on Aramis. It was BIG news--a botched cover-up job that included the Tukera super hauler carrying the two naval weapons crashing to the surface of Aramis. The PC learns, as he speaks covertly with the crew of the shuttle, that the MARQUIS TERRAN TUKERA STOLE THE MESON GUNS himself. The Tukera Vemene is attempting to keep this fact "within the family" as a scandal such as this (an Imperial traitor among the highest ranking Tukeras in the subsector) could devestate House Tukera's influence in this region of space. They're here to stop the Marquis Terran Tukera from getting away with it.

paragraph.gif
So the traitorous Vemene aboard the PC's ship are not traitors at all. All along, THEY'VE been attempting to capture a real traitor: the player character Terran Tukera.

(You should have seen the looks on my players' faces (except the one playing Terran Tukera) when this fact was revealed. Talk about twists-n-turns!)

Episode Six:

paragraph.gif
Among themselves, the players conspired (without the knowledge of the player playing Terran Tukera). They communicated with the shuttle crew, who, in turn, communicated with the rest of the Vemene forces.

paragraph.gif
On the bridge, under the nose of Terran Tukera himself, the pilot slowed the PURSUIT's acceleration, allowing the enemy vessel to approach.

paragraph.gif
In engineering, the captain of the PURSUIT took control of the room containing the Vemene troops (the ones that appeared from the cold berth). He opened the doors, and they stormed into the bridge, capturing Terran Tukera.

paragraph.gif
This session ended with the enemy vessel docked. Many men with guns boarded the PURSUIT from the Vemene vessel. But, it was soon discovered that not all the men were Vemene troops--only those secreted aboard the PURSUIT originally and the shuttle crew. The crew of the other vessel--the vessel with the illegal nuclear missiles--are mercenaries hired by the Vemene to bolster this capture operation.

paragraph.gif
The captain of the PURSUIT thought he had seen the mercenary crew before, but he couldn't quite place them. But, while he was pondering this, he found himself the target of several men with weapons.

paragraph.gif
This time, the captain and crew of the ADROIT PURSUIT were put into low berth. And, as the captain drifted into that dreamless state, the thought came to him as to where he had heard of the mercenary captain before: HE IS A HUMAN SLAVERY TRAFFIKER!

paragraph.gif
As the captain relented his fight against the sleep that dragged him down into immobility, the last thought he had was that he now understood just how House Tukera meant to deal with one of their own becoming a threat to the House and a traitor to the empire as a whole. And, that fate would rest with any commoners who "got in the way" as well. When the captain of the ADROIT PURSUIT accepted the charter from his soverign lord, the Marquis of Aramis, the captain had unknowingly "gotten himself in the way."
