Yet another SW fan film

Hmm...

Liked the City. Hated the message and tone overall. Nose Art on At-AT's rediculous. Too many Earth-Parables for my like (the At-At backing up, with tail lights, etc. the Radio banter.)

Waay too much narration/exposition. My kid asked "What's this, a new game intro?" Credits were way too long.

Imperial Installation/Hangar Bay looks TOO regimented, and not "Lived in" enough. Lot of stuff, but no people doing stuff.

Ok, again, what's with the "It is the Ground Forces That are of course the best, and have the most value" (I'm paraphrasing) where does this come from? I thought it was about the ship, going on the title.

I probably would like this more, were I alive at another time. It gave me a "Triumph of the Will" feeling, which is not a good one. I know it's a fantasy picture, but I get the feeling the people that made this are creeps. Skilled, but hyper-miltaristic creeps. This seems like the Empire is supposed to represent something in the real world... what could that be, I wonder?

Hey, no dissing the Empire! All they want is to bring order to the galaxy ... ;)

Wow! Just WOW!!!!!

At first I thought, 'Yeah. Not bad.' I liked the military-style documentary and there were some nice shots, but then they got to Davenport and my eyes almost fell out of my head. That's quite a piece of work.
As a fan film. It's exceptional quality. Great visuals and some genuinely funny moments.
I did genuinely gasp, ever-so-slightly when that imperial Star Destroyer dropped out of hyperspace to fill the screen. Not a sight you really want to see.

I have some 3D crits but they're so trivial it's not worth mentioning.

I will say that, I agree with the Baron on that they concentrated on the ground forces too much. They could have skipped the whole COPS style Predator sketch and gone straight for the shootout in the docking bay, switching then to orbit to show the Navy intercepting the ship that gets away.

As for the veiled hyper pro-military pro-west overtones? I get far more of that on a Traveller board than I do from any Star Wars fan-film, and it's not usually veiled, so I didn't really notice it.

Crow

The militarism didn't bother me. I mean, it's Imperial propaganda, so what do you expect? Anyway, I think it was supposed to be ironic, since the troops were a bunch of idiots.

Agreed. I'd say that was more likely it.

Crow

Ok, it is pretty wow indeed. Perhaps I am being pessimistic. They could have had a solid film, if they laid off the "COPS" sort of stuff as Lord Crow says... Plus, wasn't there already one like that? Troops or Troopers or something? I saw it only briefly at one of the SciFi Film Festivals in NYC, it looked pretty funny.

A lot of times the mistake is made of doing satire/comedy perhaps a bit too much. This is especially true of Star Trek fan films. "Never Beam Down In a Red Shirt" (I think that's the title...) springs to mind as a good example.

Forgive me, Lords, I should not be so harsh.

My lord, Baron. You make a fair point. There are too many fan-film satires. And, I agree the COPS style film has been done. I would probably have dismissed this one if firstly it hadn't been so funny in places and secondly it hadn't been done quite so professionally to such a high standard of quality.

Crow

Wow.

The 3D work is awesome. I'll agree with Crow, Davenport looked incredible. I really liked the design of the big carrier too (nice two-pronged mirrored hull thing going on there).

I think the only bad point in the 3D were some noticeably weird 3D perspective effects in the carrier group shots. Looked like some dubious compositing or something when you saw some of the SDs flying over other ones, or strange lighting going on.

And that AT-AT really should have done the proper "BEEEEP! BEEEEP! BEEEEP!" sound when reversing
.

The Predators were amusing. More so for me, since my party encountered them in a SW RPG once many years ago
.

I guess the hangar scene is what really should have happened at Mos Eisley if the Impies had got their act together :D

And the Pulp Fiction pisstake was fairly priceless :D .

And uh, yeah, Baron, chill dude - this is something done for fun, not a political statement
.

Yes, wow! Amazingly good CG! Best fan film CG I've seen. The Predators bit doesn't work as well as the rest of the film, IMHO, and even though the Pulp Fiction joke was a great idea, I would have left the briefcase glow stay a mystery. But I'm not complaining, overall the film is great. Can't wait for the next episode.

As for the Troops connection, this quote from their own FAQ:
Is this the long awaited "TROOPS 2?"

Originally this project was to be the sequel to “Troops” but over the course of writing and production, it evolved into something entirely different. "Troops2" was the working title of the production until the script was completed, and the project assembled. Chapter 1 of IMPS, “The Rail-Runners - Davenport Gateway” acts as a bridge to take us from the ‘COPS’ format to the soldiers of the many branches of the Imperial military. Since the military does actually act as peace officers in many cases, we thought it would be appropriate. As we delve into further Chapters, and the men and women who work as Imperial soldiers, we seek to learn who these characters are, how they came to be here, and what their responsibilities are, etc. This is why we now call it I.M.P.S. - The Relentless."
