Your single most important piece of kit

Dragon Magazine issue 51, p. 16. A half-page write-up on the traditional 1930-1970's glass milk bottle in Traveller terms.

I remember it well. It was one of the first issues I picked up. I still have it in my basement.

Cheers,

Baron Ovka

Barred from natural weaponry, your tortured Net-7 News Anchor-rat will take a good Bowie knife. I know some Ghoeknael Vargr who need to lose some pounds.

What I found noteworthy was the children's activity pack, which I assume was added to ensure the adults' sanity.

Teenagers will need iPhone recharger.

When I was in high school I devoured every survival manual I could get my hands on. The universal item that all of them said to have with you was a knife.

A multi-tool is a knife with more gadgets attacked. A Bowie is a big knife.

Break a glass milk bottle and you have a fragile knife.

That "shelter box" should be in every ship's locker. And in the trunk of my car...

My standard weekend to Homer, Alaska stuff for the car was my .30-06 bolt-action with a box of 25 shells, a case of MCI (Meal, Combat Individual, aka C-rations), some blankets, a box of flares, and a .45 Colt Automatic with a couple of spare magazines in the console.

The Children's activity packet is a very good idea. An iPhone charger does little good without somewhere to plug it in, which might be a tad hard to find in a survival situation. Now, a hand-cranked charger for things would be a good thing to have.

Solar chargers are available.
W*M carries one for $15 that is a panel and a 5 amp-hour battery, plus a USB adapter, specifically for charging tablets and phones. (My tablet, for example, gets about 5 hours of high power use (gaming) on 9.5 amp-hours; if all I'm doing is reading offline, I can double that... but that $15 charger won't be enough by itself.

The North Slope in the middle of December, where a friend of ours works, might not be the best place for a solar charger.

If society fails, the North Slope is the LAST place one wants to be stuck. It's populated well over 10x the forage capacity of the land...
And if the heating fails, people die there.

I think my single most important piece of kit is my Diamond TAS Membership card
(You know, the one with integrated holographic smartphone with map-box and credit card function)

Okay, I asked myself the question and thought "What would a Scout in the IISS want to have?" Assuming it all has to fit into something like a backpack, here's what I came up with (Mongoose Traveller):

Personal Survival Kit (TL 6, Cr 50)
(Small knife, fire-starting equipment, blanket/poncho, 4 days' preserved rations, water bottle, compass, 10 m parachute cord, mirror, water purification tablets, survival manual and small backpack in which everything else is packed)

Carbine (TL 5, Cr 250) with 50 rounds of ammo (Cr 60)

Blade (TL 2, Cr 45) with belt sheath

Hiking Boots (TL 1, Cr 50)

Duct Tape (TL 5, Cr 5)

Distress Flare (TL 6, Cr 12)

Total Cost: Cr 472

A bit of local color in the news today...

A man was arrested today when he wandered into town. He was reportedly wearing just hiking boots, a belt with a blade and backpack. Unconfirmed reports also have him carrying an 'assault rifle.'

:p
