Traveller 1248 - MIA??

Have had the products for Traveller 1248 from COMSTAR games in my drivethrurpg wishlist and was waiting for next month to make a few purchases but...they are all gone now. Does anyone know what happened?? Did the company fold or just move their products elsewhere??

Their license ended and they are no longer allowed to sell the material
produced under that license.

Yeah, as part of the MongTrav thing all the licenses to traveller (except those belonging to Mark himself and... I want to say GURPS, but I'm not sure) have ended. Which means that if you haven't picked up the books, then you're (mostly) out of luck. Picking the DTE's from a used bookstore, or from ebay or picking up the pdf's from Far Future Enterprises (if they have the cd for your brand of traveller) is about your only option at this point.

IIRC said MJD said elsewhere, the new Avenger/Comstar Traveller material will be set around 1105 for MGT and TNE 1248 won't be supported anymore.

...which in my opinion is a great shame...:(

The TNE 1248 era is a truly cool and interesting place, and the materials are all excellent. For me it's the perfect Traveller "milieu", as it incorporates both "golden era style" gaming or more "rebellion/hard times/virus style" gaming. Also it is not tied to any particular version of the game, so just pick your favourite rule set and go along...

So, I completely understand the choice that Avenger/Comstar made regarding which version of Traveller to support. Still, it's a damn shame that such a fine milieu should be allowed to just fade away...

Books 1 and 2 are available as printed books as well as PDF's. Books 3 and 4 are available as PDF's only. There's also the 2 ship books, in PDF format. I don't know if it's permitted to sell your bought PDF's, don't think so. So I guess it's up to your ebay-fu now...

The Rushed Timeline

I dunno. I think I'd have preferred the whole Rebellion / Collapse / Virus / TNE thing to be a bit further away in the future then just 11 years from the 1105 baseline from which CT (and MGT) originated.

Personally, I think the ideal timeline would have been for the Third Imperium to have continued, creaking and straining, under Strephon Alkhalikoi for a long time (until the old man's death from natural causes in, say, 1170), and for the assassination plot to have taken place in his son's lifetime, late in the 1100s - I dunno, 1185, 1190, some time like that - followed then by the Rebellion / Collapse / TNE line.

The delay would have allowed time for the Virus to develop - remember, the chip life form that spawned Virus was not discovered until 1108 on Cymbeline (as part of the LBB adventure Signal GK)- if it is ever discovered at all in the MGT version of the OTU, making its release as part of any Rebellion storyline much more gradual and dangerous (imagine if, instead of Virus being what it was, Vampire ships and insane robots, instead it was a gradual erosion of the power of technology as the chips supporting all the tech simply died. Instead of Vampire ships, dead ships and tech, and sentient species everywhere thrust back to the Stone Age until someone develops computer technology that is immune to Virus and interstellar travel can begin again).

However, if Mongoose hold the current license for Traveller and publishing stories in OTU canon, the fact that they've chosen Milieu 1105 as their baseline is a good sign. Perhaps the whole 1248 thing, and the history thereof, could be written up as a Psion's fever dream, and a warning that some futures should never be allowed to happen.

Yeah, as part of the MongTrav thing all the licenses to traveller (except those belonging to Mark himself and... I want to say GURPS, but I'm not sure) have ended.

GURPS and BITS continue, everyone else's licences sunset (ie. not renewed when their current terms are up).

IIRC said MJD said elsewhere, the new Avenger/Comstar Traveller material will be set around 1105 for MGT and TNE 1248 won't be supported anymore.

Don't expect anything for that time period until after Mongoose has done Traveller: Babylon 5, Traveller: Judge Dredd, and Traveller: Hammer's Slammers.
