Who is Avery?

Ok, I would be amiss if I did not Avery as avatar is Marc Miller but I was wondering what is the root of the name - Avery. As I was looking over my Challenge magazines and found name appears fairly frequently. So, it begs the question who is/was Avery and that he also appears as Stephon's son...this only deepens the mystery of the real life origin to Avery...

I know I've read an expose/explanation somewhere a while back (on CotI?). I seem to recall the origin being Dr. Avery from Asimov's work.

Dr Avery? I don't rememeber a Dr Avery in Asimov

Hmm, you may be correct. He's in the Robot City books, inspired by Asimov's Robot books, but not written by Asimov and fairly recent. I'm almost certain I recall a Golden Age (or nearly) sci-fi origin but seem to have conflated the recent Robot City books with it. I thought it was a character from the Foundation series but now I'm not at all sure where it was, or even if it was.

Could you be thinking of Dr. Avalon of the Black Widowers?

A different genre and not seemingly as the bell is still ringing "elsewhere" but my mind can sometimes muddle the facts so much I wouldn't rule it out :)

I asked Marc...

He has two people he knows who have Avery as part of their names (last name for one, middle name for another), and he just "likes" it. One of them has a daughter who has a business in Spain which operates as "Yreva", which many Spaniards are under the impression is Arabic for something.

So the significance of Avery is that Marc met some people with the name, and liked it.
