Serious submission question for Hunter or Avery, or the mods.

I think I already know the answer to this, but I wanted to run it by the official powers that be.

I would like to submit a Traveller story to "Analog", but realize that this is probably not a good from a copyright standpoint. However, I think it would give the game system exposure to a potential new fan base.

Anyway, I just thought I'd ask about it.

Odds are I'll submit one of my previous stories, only neutered of Traveller references.

The person you need permission from is Marc W. Miller, tho' the licensee is Mongoose Publishing.

Hunter doesn't own the Traveller Trademark. The mods don't actually work for hunter nor Marc. Well, Don volunteers for Marc.

You can ask Marc; he does answer his mail. Follow the contact link over at farfuture.net

Additional Supposition...
If the story written were deviod of all Traveller related keywords and OTU data, he could, if I am not wrong, submit the story and then state in his Author's blurb that the story was inspired by(or based on) play sessions using the Traveller RPG system.

In that case, care would have to be taken to remove FFE Copywritten terms, names and owned data but it should be fairly easy to do.

It is very important that you contact Marc right away on this...

I used the "e-mail this page" function to pass this to Marc, and he wrote me this morning that he likes the idea, and is waiting to hear from you.

Thanks DonM, but I just got a "undeliverable notice". Oh well. I'll try again later when the server's not acting up.

Meh, it's not a big deal. I thought it might be a good idea. Roger can have my Traveller creations.

p.s. well, I guess someone wanted to get my hopes up and then pull the rug out from my feet. *shrug* Poor form. Their lost. I'm a damn good writer.

DonM; don't worry about it.

I guess the lesson the experts want to drive into my skull is that I have to make my own opportunities.

It sure would help if I didn't get denied job after job over the last several years. Then to get a taste of a potential break, then to have it shattered ... again.

It's another "depression" test, or so I'm guessing.

*yawn*

How dull and boring. Off to bed with me.

Blue Ghost, I don't know what has happened when you (apparently) emailed Marc, but it may be that the real 'depression test' is how you handle rejection.

Did you get to correspond with Marc personally? From the information above, it looks like Don is offereing to arrange that for you. Unless you've been rejected by Marc personally, I wouldn't give up just yet - that's succumbing to depression.

Just trying to help. :)

I'm cool. Depression is the prospect of working discount retail for the next year, or the rest of my life.

The other stuff I can handle :)

If Analog won't print it, or Marc didn't give you permission to sell it to Analog (ie someone else is getting money off his IP), why not post it here as a fanfic? You're not making a profit, in a monetary sense, but you can get worthwhile feedback.

Whatever you do though, don't post any original fiction, in any format, anywhere. If it's fanfic, you're fine, but if it's an original story, don't let anyone other than an agent look at it. That goes for novels and shorts, but especially short stories.

I've been shuiffling stories over to Roger (starwolf) for his fan publication.

The Analog thing was just a passing idea. I seemed like a good concept, but I'm not in love with it.
