Welcome to the new COTI server. We've moved the Citizens to a new server. Please let us know in the COTI Website issue forum if you find any problems.
We, the systems administration staff, apologize for this unexpected outage of the boards. We have resolved the root cause of the problem and there should be no further disruptions.
God forbid people pay cash for something to avoid credit card theft. I mean, can you imagine paying cash for something and having no credit card fees or any way for people to track your purchases and keep records on what you buy and when and where you bought it? How horrible!

There'll soon be some technological device to swipe the card through that will sanitise the transaction records, so it'll just look like you spend an awful lot of money buying penguin food or something.
Why do people get so paranoid about electronic tracking? Some stranger on the other side of the country, or maybe the other side of the world, knows what was bought. Big deal. A nosy neighbor who was in line behind or the cashier can gossip everything around town. Give me "private" online purchasing with a credit card. This way they won't be able to use the stores video cameras and facial recognition software to track what I purchase with cash!
Excuse me, I need to go sweep the house for hidden surveillance devices that may have been planted when I left the house yesterday.

[thinly veiled political rant]It's no one's business what I buy or where I buy it.[/rant]
We could see this going in the direction of Frederick Pohl's The Space Merchants, IIRC, with people at the mercy of advertisers, your electronic devices bombarded with adware tailored from your shopping history, even personal visits from a company rep wondering why you started buying soap B after buying soap A for so many years. Where is your loyalty?

Today a website wanted my name, address, and phone number. I gave a bunch of bogus information. If I ever decide to order from the site I can correct the info or create another account.
Some times a website or other entity requires an email and that's when I hand out a junk mail email address. I once had one that even had "junkmail" in the account name. Sometimes I might need to log in right after signing up on a website that requires you to check your email before gaining access (like here?). Otherwise I totally ignore the account. Sometimes the account goes inactive from never checking it and I set up a new one when needed. What is the deal with having a "legit" email address before gaining access to a website? They are a dime a doz... Wait, no, they are absolutely free and disposable!
Keeping everything else separate, my friends and family email account almost never has junk mail that gets past the default spam filter and I've had the same account for over 16 years.
Minority Report with Tom Cruise had that sort of interactive advertising. IMO, if the gov't wanted you they could find you, having info out there would more likely make you able to hide in plain sight.

Amazon has that sort of targeted advertising these days. If you allow emails from them they do it there, otherwise they do it in the shop "Customer who looked at this also..."

As for the card: How primitive. Compared to the EC cards that stuff is 20th century at best. A chip and chip based verification etc. are old hat here in Europe. The capabilities of those cards are far greater and since they are on the card rather than in the reader more secure.
