Size and Weight of Ships

Of course some might argue that a goal of a game design when it comes to things like this is to simplify them in order to make them "realistic", yet playable for the masses.

Crazy crazy talk, we are in the gearheadiest of Traveller fora!

...I get 79 600 tonnes: 3000 [base] × 190 [armour 60 thickness] × 0.14 [armour type mod]. ...

3000 × 190 × 0.14 =79,800. My sheet calculated the added armor, then I forgot to put in the original hull mass. My bad.

...I agree the books is generally not very good, but the ED-15 destroyer is not a broken design, but roughly where a MT warship ends up, for mass at least.

My numbers aren't matching theirs, but that's always tricky since the errata changed things from what they were doing. Some of the practical details are bad - I don't see any provision for sand cannister storage other than the 12 ton cargo bay, I can't make sense of the missile storage (a battery round for 4 50 dT missile bays should be 100 missiles, not 4, but maybe that 50 dT magazine serves both missiles and sand cannisters), the lack of energy weapons or a meson battery is a problem given the way weapons damage is distributed in the combat rules, the screens are weak - but that isn't going to affect it as a way of evaluating mass.

That explains the difference. I calculate the hull as one component, not base plus added armour.

I can come pretty close. I'm off by about 200 Dt, MCr 200 and 2000 tonnes, Ok that is not all that close...

The 50 Dt magazine is just enough for 50 battery-rounds of both missiles and sandcaster, so I assumed that it was used for both.

As usual there is no sign that the designer actually read the combat system before designing a warship.
