Lack of Sonar in the Rules

I know this is a T5 thread, but maybe the rules for MT can be useful for it too.

For MT, sonar was (at least) told about in the Wet Navy design and combat rules, in issues 54 and 60 of the Challenge magazine. I have not read them in deep, but at least there is some mention...

As I have the articles, I will have to look them up. Thanks, McPerth, for reminding me of them. I did not have them when I wrote the original post.

I have looked up and reread the pertinent articles in Challenge magazine, and now have a question for the moderators. To what extent is it possible to post material from the Challenge magazine on the forum. There is a very brief paragraph mentioning sonars, and a table showing various types. Before getting into problems, I will ask for advice.

No longer a moderator, but...

Last I heard, Fair Use is 1% of the book/magazine. So 1 page out of a 100.

A paragraph and the table should be fine, I'd think. Unless someone comes along to correct me.

Frankly, I'm not sure. I don't know a dime about IP laws, and, right now, as Mongoose is a British company, I could not tell you even which laws apply, if US or UK...

I'll ask MongoseMat about those issues...

A lot depends upon who the author is.
The FUP requires permission of the author to repost the article.
US copyright law allows limited excerpts.
The content is legally available in PDF, so discussing it is reasonable... but reposting an article in total isn't.

This is the extent to which sonar is mentioned in the Wet Navy articles, without adding the table. The article is Wet Navy Part 2 Naval Weapons and Design Sequences, by Terrence McInnes, published in Challenge Magazine #54.
In addition, the sonar sensors listed blow may be included in any surface or submarine vessel design. At TL7+, sonar sensors may also be built into airdropable sonobuoys. Variable-depth sonars may be installed aboard surface ships, helicopters and grav vehicles, and may be lowered beneath the thermocline layer from a ship or hovering aircraft.
I should add that air-droppable sonobuoys were in use by 1944 by the US and British Navies. I am not really sure that adding the table would be worthwhile, as the figures are more than a tad ridiculous. I am most definitely not a fan of Traveller Design Sequences.

If you really want a generalized idea on how sonar works, I could provide that. It's a combination of array size and processing capacity as the most generalized description.
