1981 Three little books or the Traveller Book

So I've been asked, no really, to run Traveller for some friends. Well, OK. They wanted Firefly but I convinced them to go for Trav as it's basically the same thing. So I'm gearing up but my question is which would you used the 1981 printing of the three books or the Traveller Book?

I've suspected that Joss Whedon owned both The Traveller Book and The Traveller Adventure, so I'd go with The Traveller Book.

I would go with The Traveller Book as well. There are some cascades in the Skills area that make a character more interesting, as you can have Wet Navy types and atmosphere pilot types. It also picks up laser weapons if your players want them.

Another +1 for the Traveller Book. It also includes a couple of straightforward adventures that could be opening scenarios for your group.

Do High Guard, Mercenaries, Scouts, and Merchant Princes all work pretty good with the Traveller Book?

I'm afraid you're wrong. Sailors and Flyers are not in TTB, and, IIRC, the skills are the same than in LBB1...

As good as with the LBBs

Just as well as with Bk 1-3.

Plus, it has 1/16 of Supp 3, and about half of Bk 0.

Essentially, CT-'77 is 1E
CT-'81 is 2E
TTB is 2.1E
Starter is 2.2E.

There are several subtle but important differences between CT-81 and TTB. Some are in damage and healing. None of them affect Bks 4-8 nor Supp 4

If you are thinking about going whole hog, save yourself some DTRPG money and get the whole CT set with the FFE CD/USB stick at the FFE website.

I haven't had the Traveller Book in over 25 years but I think I would picked it because of the additional material.

I would probably use counters in a hex map rather than range bands for personal and starship combat.

While there are equipment and rules in Books 4+ I would like to use, I would not use the advanced character generation systems. Better to just give Book 1 characters one extra skill per term.

TTB ship combat is gridless mins... same as LBB-77 & LBB-81

I recall a detailed comparison of the text of 1977 and 1981 (and, I believe, Starter and TTB) that basically went line-by line through the rules. It was in a grid-like layout for easy study. I thought I had it somewhere, but I can't find it now and I haven't been successful searching through the library data.

Can anyone point out this resource?

EDIT: Nevermind. Haha. I found it via Tales to Astound right after posting this.

BTW, I welcome pointers to differences I might have missed. Someone mentioned damage and healing above? I might have some of those differences noted.
